What am I supposed to do for a remote?

I'm very new (less than a week) into setting up my PVR with SageTV.

My purchases so far are:
  • SageTV HD Media Extender
  • HDHomerun
  • An analog tuner that will be purchased in the next day or so.
I just realized that I don't have a remote control for my setup, and I suspect something will be required - at least to control stuff from my family room where the SageTV HD Media Extender will be located.

I suspect that the SageTV HD Media Extender comes with a remote. If so, will that be all I need?

If not, I don't necessarily need to purchase a remote, since I have a Philips Pronto with IR and RF transmission capabilities. But, I probably will need to find out the codes from somewhere.

Also, if the SageTV HD Media Extender does come with the remote I'll be using, does anybody know if it has dedicated "Power On", "Power Off", and "Home Menu" codes? That will be key to my generating useful macros for getting around (and letting my wife use the system).

Thanks!

AzJazz

The STX-HD100 comes with the remote shown in the pictures of the extender.

And, there are discrete on/off codes that can be programmed into other remotes -- see that HD100 remote control FAQ.

It does come with one, and it is all you need.

I believe Andy posted the codes for the Extender so you could program them in your Pronto and use that.

Yes, I believe it has all of them, and a lot more. The extender responds to standard RC-5 remote codes (maybe others as well), and Sage has a lot of built-in commands, you can map any IR code the extender responds to to any SageTV command. Here's an (outdated I think) list of SageTV commands (just ignore the code and the numbers, they don't mean anything to you programming a remote):

Excellent! This is exactly what I was hoping for!

My wife would have been all over me like a cheap suit if I bought all this stuff, and she couldn't use it (She's really very good with electronics, but she's a little intimidated by my home theater system ).

UPDATE: I just looked at the Excel Spreadsheet in the HD100 remote control FAQ that Andy pointed to, and I didn't see dedicated "Power On" and "Power Off" commands. I only saw a single "Power" command. Which is correct?

I haven't looked at the spreadsheet, but I'm guessing that's just the default mapping of the Extender's remote. You should be able to use some other RC5 codes and map them to the Power On and Power Off commands via the Link Commands menu.

You would need another remote if you use an external reciever. I output optical to a reciever and my volume controls through Sage do nothing. I have to control the volume through the reciever.

The remote itself only has a Power button, but the spreadsheet in the FAQ I linked to has all the remote's codes lists & includes Power On and Power Off.

BTW: You cannot link anything else to those HD100 power on/off 'comands' because those codes are hard-programmed into the HD100; they are not the same as the power on/off commands in SageTV that can be linked to other codes on a PC.

Ooops. I sit corrected!

Sorry about that - I focused on the far left "Remote Button" column, and didn't notice the middle "SageTV Command" column the first time I looked.
