Is this possible?

Nice descriptive title eh?

I'm tossing around an idea for a new fancy mini-guide, and as part of that I want a live snapshot of what's on the channel.

Basically, the miniguide would have a reference to the Airing, so the pseudo code for what I'm thinking is :

1) startRecording(theAiring) *
2) create a thumbnail from first frame of the the .mpg
3) stopRecording(theAiring)
4) Use the thumbnail in the GUI

* implied here is to use a tuner OTHER than the one that is currently being used for playback.

Won't you run into issues for someone with a single tuner system? Might be the minority but still an issue. And if two tuners are split across 2 different EPGs you could still have an issue if one of the tuners is playing.

Comcast does this with their "TV Planer". It drives me nuts! First I have to wait for the image to download then when I've read the preview I have to scroll up to the top of the little window that opened up and click the "X". The pix takes up 90% of the window, without it life woulde so much simpler! A sent a 'request' to Comcast asking if there was a way to turn off the pix, that was 2-3 weeks ago, still no response, am I supprised? NO!

Obviously if there isn't a tuner available then there would be nothing to display.

But I'm not going to worry too much about making this STVi (if it gets that far) compatible with resource constrained systems - if it works out people with that kind of setup just shouldn't use the STVi until they upgrade.

I can understand that. But even today alot of times the thumbnail is next to meaningless (can't really tell what it is showing you) or has nothing to do with your program (a commercial or previews, etc.) I would also think it would slow down your channel surfing. I'm more concerned with title or synopsis. It would look cool like some of the thumbnails do. But I still use the recording list or malore's instead of the thumbnails just for that reason.
