Wow!

Some of these diagrams are really impressive. I wanted to add my own. I don't have Visio so I whipped something in Powerpoint from a diagram I made for a user requesting help here some months ago. I also uploaded a hand sketch I did just because.

I made some changes to my setup this weekend. I made an updated diagram. It's a lot nice, IMO.

This thread has sort of died off, but I finally got around to making a diagram of my system. I have an Athlon X2 server with 5.5TB of hard drive space, 1TB which is dedicated to recordings (and the rest to DVD rips and Handbrake encodes). Most of my recordings are either QAM or firewire recordings, since I get everything except HBO and other premium channels over firewire. But, I do have an HD-PVR, which is only stable if I use stereo sound. I have an HVR-1600 complementing my HDHR, since the HDHR won't consistently tune my NBC affiliate (the native recording patch probably fixes that, but I'd rather not risk installing it).

For clients, 90% of what I watch is on my HD200 connected to a Samsung LN46A630 (that's the version with a semi-matte screen). I got the HD200 when my HD100 died and I was waiting for Sage to fix it and return it. The repaired HD100 is connected to an old 19 inch SDTV in my bedroom.

At some point I'd really, really like to get a NAS for my DVD rips and computer backups. But, if I get one, I want to make sure it gives me some breathing room on storage capacity. I figure that means I need at least a 5-bay NAS, and those are still pretty expensive. I saw the Netgear ReadyNAS NVX on sale for $600. If that was 5 bays instead of 4 I'd be awfully tempted to buy it. But, I'd like 2TB drives to come down a bit first anyway.

@Clift - What software did you use for your diagram? Can you upload it in editable format as I would like to do mine and I have many similar devices so I could save time starting from yours.

I used Powerpoint 2007. So it's a .pptx file. If you have an earlier version of powerpoint let me know and I'll send you the .ppt version. I didn't convert cause I don't know what, if any, resolution or details would be lost. Anyway the forum won't let me upload that file. Send me a PM and I will be glads to email it to you.

New to all of this

Hi all,
I'm a newbie at all of this so Let me tell you what I want to do. I am a new subscriber to Direct TV, while I love the programming I'm not happy that WMC can no longer be used. I want to record shows directly to my hard drive and eventullay to a media server. That way I am not forced to delete any programing due to lack of space on the internal hardrive of my HD DVR. It looks lke a Hauppage will solve the problem. I think. I also see that on the Hauppage website that there is now a driver that supports WMC. However surfing the net on this subject has brought me to SAGE TV. Didn't even know it existed. So my question is, and I probably know the answer. WHich is better WMC or SAGE. I have never worked with SAGE so I can't compare. Eventully I want to be able to watch all my media from anywhere. Does SAGE allow you to do that? Do I need anything extra? I do have a standard Direct TV rec. right by my computer and can upgrade to an HD if need be. Thats in advance for any help.
Jim

Since this is a SageTV forum, I would expect the overwhelming majority of people to say that SageTV is better than WMC. There is a free 21-day trial for the software, you can download it and try it out for yourself. As far as watching all your media from anywhere, there is placeshifter software available from Sage for a reasonable price. However, how well it would work for you depends on a lot of factors, including the internet upload speeds at your home, and the internet download speed for wherever it is that you would be watching from. And if you are watching from a hotel somewhere, it also would depend on how much of the available download bandwidth other hotel guests are using. Also, if you are trying to use a wifi connection, that could come into play also. Finally, and this is just my opinion, I would never spend the money and time on this for SD content, HD to me is a must.

This is my current SageTV setup. One downfall is, if server dies, no television in the whole house. Server OS is raided to prevent system failure due to OS drive failure.

I saw a couple of people with cable TV set top boxes (Comcast, Time Warner). One or more was controlled by Firewire from the server PC. One STB was a Motorola DCT6200 - apparently furnished by Comcast and able to decrypt.

Is Sage using Firewire to control the tuner in the STB? How's this done?

It can. Tuner Configuration Tips and Instructions Check the Firewire links. And search is your friend.
