I think I'm just hitting the upper limit of my machine's capabilities. One last question -- is it worth it for me to try the HD3650? I'm trying to play 720p content. I know the HD2400Pro is the weakest of the bunch, so I'm wondering if the HD3650 512MB (AGP version) would make a difference. If not, I'll have to scrap everything and build a whole new HTPC box. My setup:

Shuttle SK43G
Athlon XP 2800+ Barton
512MB DDR2 RAM
Sapphire HD2400Pro 256MB
40GB PATA drive (C
500GB PATA drive (D

I could increase the memory to 1GB, if that'll make any difference.

I would suggest a Dual Core CPU before anything else. and more then 1 meg memory. If this requires a new HTPC, then that what it takes!!

AGP is pretty much done, hard to use Blue-ray with a AGP card.

I got everything to work. The key was leveraging DXVA. I couldn't get MKV 720p videos to play well, but with Media Player Classic Home Cinema edition (http://tibrium.neuf.fr/), CPU usage plummeted from 100% to under 20%. I can't believe what a difference it made.

so from what I read so far, if I can't get CC data out of an HDHR mpg, I've either set up ccextractor incorrectly or it's not in the data stream. I'll have to check the TV and see if the SD QAM channels show any CC data.

Exclamation Further Adventures in CC Land

Folks,

I've set up a new system:

Asus T3 barebone
Core2Duo E4600 2.4Ghz
2GB Crucial RAM
500GB Seagate SATA drive
Gigabyte Radeon 2400 XT 256MB
HDHomeRun (Comcast basic cable)
WinPVR250MCE (DISH network)
Windows XP Pro
Sage v6.4.8.184

I'm still experiencing CC issues with the recordings via HDHR. Now that I'm no longer hampered by weak hardware, I've been able to experiment, and here are my findings.

ATI mpeg codec (CCC v2008.0923.2139.39656)
- HD stream captions OK, SD stream captions not displayed
default codec
- HD stream captions OK, SD stream captions not displayed
Sage mpeg codec (v6.4.8.184)
- HD stream captions OK, SD stream captions not displayed
Intervideo mpeg codec (windvd 9)
- HD stream captions OK, SD stream captions not displayed
Cyberlink (powerdvd 8)
- HD stream captions not displayed, SD stream captions not displayed

And here's a kicker: I still have an archived recording of a Frasier episode, which was recorded with the PVR250 when I had cable hooked up to it (instead of DISH). So this was not an HDHR stream capture; the analog signal went through the PVR250 and was recorded. Here, the only way I can see captions is by using the Cyberlink codec.

With my previous setup, I was able to record SD via HDHR and get good captions with certain channels via Sage mpeg codec. But now it's no longer coming through.

At this point, I'm fairly certain that the CC stream exists. It seems to be the mpeg filter that governs the display of these captions. Are there any other ones I could try?

I get HD captions from both Intervideo and Cyberlink (PDVD8) from my OTA Avermedia M780's.

Never had SD captions except from PVR-150 from cable source.
