And suddenly he found more than he was looking for...
OK, sounds like a good idea. I'm a .NET programmer, so for you to use any forthcoming code from my side, will require the .Net Framework on your computer (sorry about the footprint). Would that be acceptable? (Those of us using the XMLTV Automate utility already have the framework installed)

I have a broadband connection and regularly install everything available on the Windows Update site, so I have .NET Framework installed. Besides, I have Visual Studio .NET 2003 installed and I'm sure that puts the Framework on too.

Very well documented.....I'm excited to use this. I have all my sage tv computer parts on the coffee table, I just recently moved this weekend...SageTV is on the list of things to get built soon. : )
If your computer comes out of standby/hibernate to a login screen, will sage still be able to record? I would assume so, it would be like locking your computer. I just can't try it out yet to see....just curious.

As long as your account is logged in and SageTV is running, it doesn't matter whether your session is connected or if you're just sitting at the login/welcome screen: SageTV will record properly. The biggest issue I've encountered is when the computer is forcibly put to sleep by the user while SageTV is recording, then the filter graph will fail when the computer wakes up and Sage seems unable to recover from this. It hasn't been an issue for me since I rarely tell my computer to sleep explicitly, and if I do, I put Sage to sleep first and make sure it's not recording anything.

SageWake 1.2
Note: This feature is tested only with the present beta releases of SageTV and SageRecorder. If you have problems getting it to work with the older releases, please let me know. EDIT: See below for latest version. Last edited by mwhitlock; 03-18-2004 at 03:47 PM. |

Thanks I can't wait to test this out.
My electric bill runs $100 a month because of all the computers I have that are always on...can't wait to let them go into hibernate to save some money. Later, John

John, that's quite a setup you have there. Be sure to post and let me know if you get everything working.

mwhitlock,
It has taken me some time to get this working but it looks good. I initially had some problems because other apps were preventing the system from going into hibernate nicely, but now that those issues are resolved the system goes into hibernate and then when it resumes all the instances of SageRecorder and SageTV are closed and then started again and all the IR Controllers work as they should. My next problem is figuring out why my system will not hibernate after what should be 15 minutes of inactivity, but at least at this point SageWake does everything it should after a manual hibernate. Thanks for your great program, John

jpatz, do you have drives mapped? If so thats why your system will not hibernate. Use UNC for everything and it will work fine.

Thanks falchulk,
I did that last night and it did not work, but on the plus side I did find what was causing the problem. For some reason my APC UPS status monitor was preventing the system from sleeping. I don't know if it was writing to disk periodically or if it was polling the UPS which caused the problem. Not a big deal since I don't really need to see the status and since the system service is still running it will handle a power failure nicely. Thanks again for the great program mwhitlock. I did notice a minor bug in the XML logging. I have 4 capture cards and if the next recording is not from the first PVR it will list two names together in the log for the next wake event. The first will be the name for next show that will record on PVR 1 followed by the name of the show it is actually waiting to record. It gets the right program to wait for but just puts two show names together. Really minor, but just thought you would want to know. Thanks again, John

jptaz, OH YEAH, I remember that from months ago. I had the same issue with my APC. After that was the mapped drives problem for me.

Ok I am going crazy.
I have gone through everything I can think of. No drive mappings or network sessions connected to PC. No applications or system services except for SageTV and 3 instances of SageRecorder. I have even disabled APC UPS system Service and still no go. It is so frustrating since I can manually put the system into hibernation and wake fine. I am beginning to think SageTV or SageRecorder is preventing the systen from sleeping. I guess I will start experimenting with quitting these one at a time and see if the system hibernates on its own.

Did you disconnect the USB from the APC? Thats what I had to do.

mwhitlock,
Thanks for the update. I figured out what the problem was. I usually shrink SageTV down to system tray since 99% of the time I watch on the client PC. It looks like SageTV prevents the computer from sleeping in this mode, which I don't understand since there is no GUI. So it didn't matter that the APC status program or anything else was running. Now I just minimize SageTV instead of shrinking it to the system tray. Thanks for the great program, John
