taking a bow!
Actually, I had never heard of MPC-HD until I read this thread...I'm interested in it based upon you saying that it works great with ATI cards, and I'm running a 2600XT as well. I checked the link you posted earlier, but it brings up a garbled page with no download link. Obviously I didn't spend too much time forraging for it yet...
Regarding getting Gabest working, I just downloaded the DSFP, grabbed the MKV Splitter folder out of it and ran the install.bat file. Done.

MPC-HC is awesome; made even better because all their filters are OSS. That said, I've never been able to get the mkv splitter to work reliablly with other decoders or outside of the application.

I linked the x64 filter by mistake - the x86 one is here

Thank you for your info and links
I already had the MediaInfo but had forgot about it, I had a movie1080p.mkv that I just could not get to play in Sage so I ended up installing K-Lite Codec Pack 4.90 Full with Media Player Classic Home Cinema (HC) and was able to play the movie1080p.mkv in Media Player Classic Home Cinema, then added that app to my remote to control and after reading this thread I downloaded the MPC HC video decoder then:
Installed MPCVideoDec.ax file to the location of
C:\Program Files (x86)\SageTV\Common

then I Modified file: Sage.properties
property: always_use_dshow_player=false
It was set to true
Note: When this is set to true the file would NOT play in Sage, it might be because I have the K-Lite package installed, I had to install it to play some videos from the A+, Network+ courses I am taking, my old career went away with the economy I am training for a new one, hopefully to get back to work, been unemployed since Nov 2008.
I Registered the file by:
open a elevated cmd prompt and PASTE THE BELOW LINE IN IT
regsvr32 "C:\Program Files (x86)\SageTV\Common\MPCVideoDec.ax"

by doing all this I was allowed to play the file movie1080.mkv in Sage

when you open the .mkv file in MediaInfo and the line below says
1 video stream: AVC
the above settings will fix this and allow you to play the file in Sage

Thanks to everyone

So where do I get the Gabest file, and what do I do with it?

DirectShow FilterPack (DSFP) at bottom of page are the downloads

from webpage

I don't like installers and that's the reason why I'm using BAT-files to install/register all the DirectShow filters. All the
BAT-files do is letting Windows know the DirectShow filters in my package are available and ready for use by adding
them to the Windows Registry. This way Windows can use them to build DirectShow Graphs. Or in other words:
this way you can use them to play your favorite music/videos you couldn't play before.
the latest version is: DirectShow FilterPack 3.23.7z
you will need a 7 zip extractor http://www.7-zip.org/ after you unzip it contains
two files: DSFP-3.23.exe and DSFP-3.23_readme.txt, then readme will explain the bat files and where they will be.
I have downloaded it but haven't used it yet.

I like the codec packs. I use the Klite Codec pack. Insall Media Player classic and all the codecs you should need. GraphStudio is built into the install.

I run everything in Windows 7 now and all I do is install Klite and set: "always_use_dshow_player=true" in Sage properties. I set everything in Sage Detail setup as ffdShow.

I will install the CoreAVC codec later because I think it looks a little better but it works fines without it. This is the easiest way I have found to set up.

When did Arcsoft stop registering their codec in directshow?

Is there anything that doesn't require ffdshow? I've been reading about different ways and most all say "then install ffdshow". I tried the Vista Codec Pack, but mkv playback was jerky. I'd rather not use codec packs any more if I don't have to. Graphstudio still shows no video output. I tried adding a filter, but nothing worked (probably because I don't know what I'm doing).

What about DivX 7? That's added mkv support now. I used to install DivX and then any divx/xvid files would play in SageTV. I didn't know if mkv's worked outside of DivX's own player or only in their player. I tried it, but it still didn't work. But I'm not ruling it out 'cause I think something screwy is going on with my PC.

you regsvr32 the x86 mpchc video decoder and it still doesn't connect in graphstudio?

the divx source filter is a media foundation mkv source, it will not work for this.

Yes, I registered the decoder (said it was successful), but it still doesn't show up in graphstudio.

Will the divx filter work in Windows 7? I gave up trying last night and installed Win 7 RC.

If you use GraphStudio to enum the filters does it show up in the list (Graph->Insert Filter: called MPC - Video decoder)?

Sage uses DirectShow for playback, a MediaFoundation source will only work in applications useing MF.
