To be able to watch HDTV via satellite in europe with SageTV you have to use native recording patch. Currently more and more channels are switching from SDTV to HDTV in Europe. In my sageTV intallation native recording patch is working fine (except the fact you can't disable native.log) - unfortunatly he had some issues with a dying sagetv service and channel scan when using the native recording patch.

He bought a new 48" plasma tv at the end of the last year to stay ahead of the curve - every new problem with sagetv service decreased the WAF. He tryed both XP and Windows7 [I know, Windows 7 isn't official supported, but thats another point which is hard to understand] - he bought two new satellite cards (SkyStar USB 2 instead of Technotrend TT-budget S2-3200) - reinstalled the system - all without success. We are doing a lot of computer stuff togehter during our weekends, but unfortunatly I could'nt help him to fix his problems. As there will be no new versions of the native recording patch bevor the next beta version of SageTV (http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/show...&postcount=346) he had to do something ...

I don't think he will sell the two HD 200 devices - just put them beside for 6 or 12 months and then check again to see what's possible with SageTV. He is collection a lot of computer stuff.

Just get me right - I don't want to start any kind of negative reporting thread about SageTV. Just thought it was a good idea to post my observations and to give some feedback.

It was discussed by SageTV publicly at CES

GeekTonic
ZatzNotFunny

And has been discussed on these forums quite a bit as well. But you're right, they don't discuss new stuff much (if at all) until it's ready for the public to try out. It's just the way they have to do things. Again, I hate to see someone leave SageTV, but what I was trying (not very well probably) to say was an announcement from SageTV that they are working on version 7 wouldn't likely have kept him from leaving. Because they won't say much about the featureset and such until you see the first public beta that will be available for all to download.

... hmm - the posting in GeekTonic is refering to the posting in ZatzNotFunny. So there is only one posting where Datz Zatz (which is not related to SageTV - right ?) is saying "[..] I was hopeful of getting a sneak peak at version 7 of SageTV which features an all-new 3D UI. But we’re going to have to wait a bit longer. [..]".

Honestly, in my understanding this is no public announcement that SageTV is working on Version 7 - that's is just an assumption of an external that they are doing so, he might be wrong with his assumption.

But, ok - I understand - that's there will never be an official announcement from SageTV neither that they are developing a new version nore about the features of the new version. That's the way SageTV is doing his business - in my point of view it's quite unusual, but it's their right to do what they think is best.

They're a small private company. They have been burned in the past about pre-announcing things and not being able to deliver on what was announced. Now they play it more safely like most companies do and not announce anything till there's actually something they can actually announce. Nothing wrong with that.

I know the guy that writes for ZatzNotFunny pretty well and if they (Dave Zatz met with the head of SageTV in person) allowed Dave Zatz to publish that information, it's pretty much official. I would have had it as a separate announcement on GeekTonic (my tech blog) but Dave was there in person and I always credit the person who breaks said news...

Not going to see it as a headline on the SageTV site until they are ready to show it off to the public - that's just how it is.

And then there's that ^^^ too. Probably about as official as you'll get out of them.

Major news organizations have reported on less with regards to the next Apple product.

Actually, if you read the comments, he said when asked, "Dave Zatz January 8th, 2010 at 12:26 pm Yes, CEO Mike Machado explicitly told me version 7 is being developed along with a 3D UI"

Also, while not "public", I have an email from George stating:
We are working on the beta for version 7 and that will have quite a few updates and fixes. We also at some [time will] be releasing a beta version for testing as well.

When I received that email on February 3rd, I was hoping that the beta release wouldn't be that far off. After two months, I have to admit I'm getting a bit impatient -- though I understand these things can take time.

Not sure how all this stuff works but my thought is that a lot is going to depend on what these new Cable Card devices will let us(sagetv) do.

Take the HDHRCC. My thought is that we are not going to see anything untill after SageTV gets their hands on one and can use the data it will be spewing out. That could be awhile, because there was a flurry of notices in HDHR forum on new HDHRCC and like SageTv not a word for ages now.

When SageTV can handle whatever that protected format is coming from the HDHRCC unit they would have something to offer us.

If Sage Tv can't handle whatever the HDHRCC unit puts out then surly all we are going to get from SageTv is a interface update. While nice that isn't going to shove us up the technology ladder.

To put things into a little perspective, the first public beta of v6 was Sage v6.0.11, implying that there were 10 private releases. Right now Sage is apparently on v7.0.6. At least, they are if you don't think Sage is just playing a practical joke on us.

The HDHRCC beta is suppose to start somewhat soon. But, a SiliconDust person over there strongly suggested that even if they're able to support third-party, uncertified apps like SageTV, that's not going to happen during the beta.

I still highly doubt we'll ever see DRM in Sage, mostly for licensing reasons. If Sage supports cable card, I bet it will only be copy-freely content. Sorry Time-Warner subscribers.

I expect more than just an interface update. At the very least, I'm also expecting full Windows 7 compatibility.

I find interesting that among us are obviously people who have access to these private betas and they are doing good job not leaking any info at all. I wonder who could they be

I don't even know what the native recording patch is but often watch BBC HD using my HD200 connected to a projector. This is an H.264 MPE4 channel although it uses DVB-S rather than DVB-S2 as most other HD channels. It will not play on the Windows 7 SageTV server but that is because I don't have a suitable MPEG4 decoder installed. The tuner cards are FloppyDTV-S2s

If you install the Native Recording Patch from here:

http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=43579

and follow the directions about adding the Microsoft Video Decoder you should be able to watch those recordings just fine.

Divx provides a free h.264 codec. You can download it here:
