Although (I believe) it does need a codec that can handle CC, the only flaw I've seen with the built in 2.1 CC is (as noted in the manual) that it will not work in Overlay with Color Keying enabled. Otherwise it works great on my server (Overlay with Colr Keying disabled) and on my client (VMR9 with Color Keying enabled).

So, seems to work in every other video mode except the one I normally like to use (Overlay with Color Keying).

Not sure what you have in mind for any extra support for the built in CC since it just plain works as is... unless you can find away around the Color Keying with Overlay problem, which is probably some internal klinker with SageTV.

Is Malore's code pretty much video output independant so it can always be used as a "fall-back" CC support (assuming you have the SMI files needed)?
Yes in my experience, it seems to work with everything that uses the Sage OSD. Which makes sense, since it is generated by the STV just the UI/OSD. I'd imagine it would even work with the MVP client STV, but I don't have one to test.

What conditions/codec/display does the built in 2.1 CC support not work for you?
Well the obvious one is Overlay mode with color keying enabled.edit:mls beat me to it.end of edit As for the different configs I'd have to run tests and make a chart. I don't want to possibly give you the wrong info from memory.

Ya know what's really weird? Other than that one specific mode combo of Overlay with Color Keying enablled (where the CC just doesn't display, don't effect anything else)...

So far, the built in CC seems to be about the only new feature in v2.1 that actually does work right (and very well too). Seems like there are problems with ever other new feature except the CC support. Weird.

This is EXACTLY what I'm working on (color key enabled) so that you can run your settings just like you would want to if you weren't interested in CC. <-- I hope that made sense.

What I've got so far is the ability to run in Overlay mode AND display CC info AND display semi transparent overlays. So the OSD works just like it does in my current Cayars STV (for those familar with it) but now supports CC in Overlay mode.

I wasn't sure if the "Overlay/3D Accer/Color Key" combination was the only issue people knew of, or if there were any other issues with CC I'd tackle while working in the OSD.

BTW, what mode does the PVR-350 use to output (VMR9/Overlay)?

VMR9 and Overlay should be only for the computer video card output. The 350 is a decoder with its own video out. No idea how they get the OSD into the stream for the 350. Hopefully someone else can answer that part.

Yea, your right, what was I thinking...

Does 2.1s CC work via the PVR-350 out?

Do you get transparent overlays on the PVR-350 out?

The SageTV v.2.1 manual states that it can't display CC through the pvr-350 output.

The "manual". I keep forgetting we have one of them now that's updated (good work Opus4). Maybe before I ask my next question I'll see if the answer is in the "book".

I've addressed this issue (Overlay with Color Keying Enabled) in my Cayars version "F" release. You can have CC with Semi-Transparent overlayed menus too while keeping Color Key Enabled.

so I've been trying to get CC to work, and its not working. I'm using 2.1 with a pvr 350, I set the option in sage.properties, added the registry key in both possible places, and i'm using dvd standard play. I don't get any captions using cc1 or cc2, and what's more, i tried using mpg2srt, and it exports files with no caption data. Does this mean the files definately dont have the caption data embedded? Is there something else i need to set up? Ideas?

Are you trying the built-in CC, or what? Appendix K in the v2.1 manual mentions SageTV's preliminary/experimental CC usage, but it won't show on the 350's TV-out & with other settings. Check out the last page -- p. 203.

While I can't comment on seeing the captions with the 350, I can tell you with certainty that if mpg2srt output no caption data then your setup isn't trying to record them. Even older shows that were not captioned will typically have at least one captioned commercial. Do a search over at SHS's forum regarding CC's/driver version. Depending on your driver version, where you need to put the registry entry is very different.

yeah, i read through appendix k a few times, and ive done everything it mentions. I'm using vmr9 and the computer monitor, not tv out, oh and i forgot to mention i just reinstalled the 350 driver with version currently on the hauppauge site. I wouldn't be surprised if the problem is with the capture setup or the files or something, mpg2srt creates files with nothing but header info - no actual captions

That registry info is here, but I didn't post that initially, since he said that he "added the registry key in both possible places". In case it didn't mean what I thought it meant, see the link.

Ah. I didn't realize that info was in the FAQ. Cool. Thanks for the heads up!

the keys I added, or checked to make sure sage added are:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4d36e96c-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}\0019\Driver\InsertCCInDvd = 0x00000001
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Globespan\Parameters\ivac15\Driver\InsertCCInDvd

I also checked for the third place, but i have no HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class key
the driver version is 1.18.21.22266, so the first one should have done it

Just to clarify: that's Amontiallado's site, not a SageTV-related FAQ, if that is what you meant.

Well that's really annoying. All of a sudden its working fine in sage. The channels i was watching definately had CC data too - I had a tv on to make sure. Maybe it was changing the video filters, i think thats the last thing i changed. Sorry, I can't explain it. Really appreaciate the help though. Thanks guys

If you mean decoders, then yes that will/can make a difference as all decoders do not support CC.
