So I am revisting this thread ..yet again because I have had some recent exposure to streaming on the roku player, and while it isn't perfect it is def a workable solution for SageTV. I haven't abandoned my one ui web interface for all, but i think this might be doable in a quicker time frame.
I use something called subsonic, which if you haven't heard of or used you should def. check it out. Subsonic a few releases ago added support for streaming video. Well i have tested bluray, dvd, recordings, tvshows consiting of (mpeg2, mpeg4, MKV, AVI) and all work embeded in my browser flawlessly. its pretty amazing how well it works actually. So this started me poking around on the net to see what i could find. there is a subsonictv ap built for the roku which will play all of your music as well as your videos you have mapped in subsonic. I think that this is def. a workable solution, and while the ui in my opinion is a little lackluster i think it may work nicely. I am also a bit put off by the fact that we have to transcode, but to be honest i would have to transcode for a complete webui solution anyways. I am also being slowly persuaded by a few friends who need additional extenders and woul really like to spend 49.99 rather than 499.99 ( :-) ) like extenders on ebay. please let me know if anyone else is still interested in this.... |

Have you tested the subsonic/roku combo with any 1080i recordings from an HD-PVR by any chance?

I have not actually tested anything on the Roku as of yet. the roku sbusonic app is 4.99 and i don't currently own a roku. What i have tried though is full 1080p Bluray in mkv format from chrome subsonic interface. its pretty friggin sweet is all i can say. :-)
if you want to pm me and provide me with a 10 - 15 second clip of a full uncompressed HDPVR recorded content, i will gladly try it for you on subsonic.....im still undecided on which route i want to go, but i feel like with the price point of the roku, many people would benefit from a roku app. the boxee box is a super cool device, but sorta expensive. 49.99 entry level roku is much more attractive to the masses i think. i am open to suggestions, ideas, "youre stupid for thinking this Mike" ideas :-) |

Will get you a clip later today, I hope. What are the specs of the system you have subsonic installed on?

you can install subsonic on just about anything. I am currently running subsonic on my unraid server. my unraid server specs are a dual core 64 bit athlon chip (don't recall off the top of my head what teh speed is.) it has 2 GB of ram. and the number of drives and such are below in my sig.
you shoudl easily be able to run this using the .exe installer from the subsonic website. i have installed and run it on my sage server before, pointed it at my recordings and been able to successfully get my recordings. There is no metdata or anything like that but its still cool. if you email me (i believe you have my email from the boxee project) I will gladly create you a guest account on my subsonic server so you can see how it works with music (my main use) as well as a few recordings, and bluray/dvd i have on there. its pretty slick. the webui isn't the greatest, but there are other projects out there most noteably subtunes which cleans up the oldish ui. Keep in mind for the roku channel or other alternatives i am thinking about building It will not require subsonic...subsonic was just a starting point for the feasability of this. |

Yes of course it can be installed on anything but since you mentioned transcoding, horsepower counts

everytime i get into possibly making this app, other ideas come up that just seem to be better solutions. for now if i were you what i would do is this
1) download and install Plex Media Server 2) setup the recordings directory as import in PLEX 3) go download the Roku Plex ap. The cool thing about plex is that it has built in transcoding, so getting your videos to the roku shouldn't be a problem. **you will need to setup sage to sage the SxxExx in the file name in order for plex to successfully scrape your tv shows. |

Sorry for being a dunce, but where do I find this option, or is it a plugin? Will sage rename my previously recorded files to the SxxExx format?

no worries
sage will not go back and renmae old files which is a big issue in my opinion here is the link to the plex thread http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/show...highlight=Plex also i am currently working on taking the XBMC SageTV integration script created by bradvido88 on the xbmc forum and manipulating it so that it will work with Plex. Rightnow I have the script working perfectly in xbmc, but i really want to get it running in plex. if plex can read the symlinks folder correctly then the issue of renaming files with sxxexx is a none issue http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?t=87261 |

Yeah, renaming the old files is a big deal for me at least.
Hope you can get the symbolic links to work. Will be keeping an eye on your progress. Thanks!

Did you try the symlinks folder with Plex and had a problem or have you not had time to try it yet?

I have been messing with it on an off for a day. I can't get plex to scan the symlinks folder correctly which according to everything i have read it should be able to do no problem.
If i can get plex to scan the symlink correctly, then we have an effictve, feature rich multi platform front end for sage. 1) handles bluray, dvd, etc with rich metadata and some nice ui features 2) works on apple tv 2 (currently what i am testing it on), roku channel, ios clients, lg stb, and lg tv client 3) scheduled script will give near real time tv to plex. 4) built in transcoding which will utlimately support many more devices that will come out in the future. |

Thanks for this work!
Definite interest on my part as I have had extenders failing on my and just purchased a ROKU box and would love to get to a point where I'm using that to stream STV recordings along with any other videos! Thanks!

All about efficiency! :-) Looking at the Plex product right now and considering loading onto my SageTV server tonight. To basically use an existing media management product with a ROKU channel & mobile apps already sounds like a GREAT start! Happy to help you test if need additional help. Thanks again!

I will check back here too and also start following the other threads recommended from above. I am getting to many HD TV's in the house and although I have several extra very old Media MVPs laying around for replacements, moving from Version 5 to Version 7 with newer tuner cards and all the other crap too will no doubt remove my options for watching SageTV recorded material on my TVs unless some reasonable option appears to replace the HD100 and HD200 that are no longer available along with the licences to go with them.
I had figured that XBOX was probably going to be the only way I could have some ability to get my recorded material, but Plex looks like it may be "the" solution for all of us wanting to keep SageTV alive with equipment failing as it ages. I have looked at NextPVR and I believe you can use an XBMC to watch recorded material on your TVs......I just am so used to SageTV and even though my version 5 is laughable to many of you using version 7, I need to update to HD. I may have 12 more months of SD TV in my house then all my TVs will be HD capable. I have to find a solution. Bob E.
