I've found the National Do Not Call List may help, but it does not stop the telemarketers from calling if they ignore the law. We get many automated calls from telemarketers. Automated telemarketing calls are illegal in Minnesota, but they do it anyway. Legally, the telemarketing calls initial contact must be by a person, then they could play a recording.

There was guy in Minnesota that made about $100,000 per year suing telemarketers for five years. He had several numbers and they were on the do not call list. He would collect extra money when the telemarketers swore at him. Some of the smaller companies were even put on payment plans. I think his average legal take was about $1,800 per company. I think he might have finally lost some court cases after making $500,000 in five years. His story was on a couple local TV stations in my area. He also wrote a book how to sue telemarketers too.

I remember stories of someone doing that, but he only got around $8,000 and lived in Sacramento. For $100,000, it may well be worth the effort.

I found routing anonymous, manually black-listed and numbers that match public telemarketer lists, like that from callercomplaints.com, through a telemarketing blocker ("... ff you are not a telemarketer, press 5 to proceed ..."), works really well, without blocking any good calls. But now I'll need to think about that $100,000, especially since I'm a from Minnesota as well... Perhaps some of the most irritating offenders should be allowed through!

I guess another question that could be asked and would narrow down your choices would be do you need to port your current phone number?

Everytime I looked at Vonage, to me, they werent very cheap, most times I could get Verizon to bundle home phone with my fios/tv for far less then Vonage.
