Boy, I'm really glad I sent mine back but I feel sorry for the people who kept their Echos due to Ceton's assurances that great things were coming right about when the extended return period was up.

Their reasoning for scrapping the whole project sounds a little fishy to me. There are going to be some irate posts on TGB tonight...

They should have known it was a risky bet. The first few months of the Echo's life didn't go exactly smooth. I'm not sure why anyone had much confidence in Ceton at that point.

He's really not that bad. Sure, he's a bit of an Echo fanboy, and has defended Ceton even when they've been in the wrong (in my opinion), but no more so than I've seen plenty users do in this forum with Sage.

Sammy has at least been relatively respectful in his posts.

Well we can't say we didn't see that one comming. No real surprise there. What a disappointment Ceton was with the Echo. And to think they are still going to sell them with less support then an XBox.

I know this is an older thread, but for just playing WMC recorded content, does it work?

Keep the output set to 720 and hope there are no 1080i source channels ...

Why is that?

Did they ever fix the deinterlacing issues? I ended up sending mine back because all of my cable channels are 1080i for the most part. It would not render correctly and frequently reboot when it "got confussed" when set to 1080p.

This was heavily documented on the closed thread over at AVS. Unless I missed a firmware update it still exists to my knowlage. Sammy2 over at AVS never saw this issue because he set his Echo to 720p output and states it still works great for him in that res.

I thought you were part of that issue submitted on Ceton's testing tracker?

Ceton greatly improved the Echo's handling of interlaced video a couple weeks after release. Though, I never thought things quite looked right. 1080i recordings seemed to show stuttering/juddering. It wasn't terrible, but I found it distracting.

The major DI issue was fixed a few weeks after launch, and in general the stability and performance of the Echo has gotten better. It still isn't an awesome media player, but it is adequate for watching recorded TV.

The most disappointing thing about it is that Ceton gave up on much of what they wanted to accomplish with the device. It's unclear if those plans, and the effort to make it happen, have been scrapped completely. My guess is that it has.

Exactly, watch that on a 70+ inch LCD and it's aweful. To be fair, a 40" LCD is probably decent.
