Well, I've had very good luck with SageTV + Plex + Roku 2 XS (once I switched my cable set-top box to 720p fixed output). The Plex/BMT scanners work very well for me so cover art is exactly what I see on SageTV.

And just a couple of nights ago, I took my Roku to a friend's house and proceeded to to watch content from my server at home. Yes it was transcoded but it was perfectly acceptable. So much so, they're going to buy their own Roku to connect up to my server regularly.

(thanks goodness for FiOS )

I think I got DVDs working through plex but I don't remember for sure, maybe it was BD rips. I only tried it for a day or so after I got my Roku XS so I don't remember that clearly.

Well, my future solution may entail streaming movies from Amazon Instant Video or Google Play, and just buying viewing rights. The problem is the current sunk cost. Hopefully bandwidth frees up to be able to stream HD movies without concern, although right now thats not an option.

I could only get converted rips to work (MKV) not Video_TS rips. I think BD MKV would work fine, I just seem to compare everything to Sage, even the BTM/Pheonix fanart simplicity, which is second to none. Man I wish cablecard would have been further developed, since the Echo isn't as shiny as it was a week ago.

Yes, we all know how special Sage is. Without a doubt the best PVR/DVR that there was and for some still is. I just wish I were among that list still. I should have never bought that new TV ...

It does through extenders - isn't that what this discussion was about - using Extenders or Rokus or the Ceton Echo?

I was talking about something else. I meant that you can't stream them with plex over the internet. It works just fine when your on your LAN. I think we weren't thinking of the same thing. Could be wrong though.

Really, You can use Plex to stream natively ripped DVDBD rips. Meaning Video_ts folder format for DVD?

If so, I coul dnot get that to work for anything. Ramdom fanart as well.

Different than what BMT displays for the same file? (I'm assuming we're talking about Sage recorded content). If not, then it's easy enough to fix cover art for ripped content in Plex though I rarely have to...

Over the LAN yes, video_ts dvd folders work just fine. Over the internet they don't work.

Over the LAN to a PC client. Not to Roku, Android, iOS, etc.

It's one of the main reasons I've been converting everything using Handbrake.

Ok, so what has to be done to support video_ts folders with Plex, that definetly did not work for me.

And now back to the regularly scheduled programing ...

Ok, that's what I thought. Only to another PC. Makes perfect sense. I was using Android (Pivos) and Roku.

Some early reports coming in over on the Echo AVS thread shows that it chokes on high bit rate (i.e. BD) .mkv's.

Pretty useless to me (and to most sage users with HD-300's) if that is the case.

That's what I meant by "over the internet". I wasn't happy about the fact that I'd have to convert my 800 or so dvd's to .mkv to get it to work on my phone.

Yeah, anyone interested in the Echo, like me, will have to face the facts that it is NOT an HD300 replacement. I guess just like 7MC is NOT a replacement for Sage either.

But the fact remains for me that I will have to go down this road anyway, if I want HD in my HT for recorded/live TV. Hopefully in future fw release it will get better and maybe even mature into bigger and better products from Ceton.

There still is the option of the HD-PVR. I have been using two of them for years without issue and without having to worry about DRM issues. As such I see no reason to stop using Sage for the forseeable future - I have 2xHD-300 and 8xHD-200, two server licenses and a client license. That should keep me going until Ultra HDTV comes out and that is probably a decade away.

With new development happening recently in Gemstone and mc2xml I think the Sage future is looking brighter than it has since the Google acquisition.

And I would be careful about moving to Windows Media Center as MS has totally lost interest in it.

Yeah, If I could have gotten the HD-PVR working reliably I would be using them, but I could not and got half my money back on ebay instead.

As for 7MC, there is no other kid in town which has full CableCard support right now, if there is please let me know. MS needs to support 7MC for a while, and is offering it up as a plugin of sorts to Win 8. I realize there eHome division is a ghost town right now, but you never know, at least they wern't bought up by Google, at least not yet.
