I use VirtualDub Mpeg2. And it DOES encode audio and video. I use mp3 for my audio and divx 5.2 for my video. Looks great and encodes at about 20fps on my AMD2600+ (@1800MHZ, for quiet operation.)

Oops! The compression of audio requires you to select full processing from the audio menu, which I hadn't worked out (doh!). A quick download of the LAME encoder and I have a rather impressive XVID. I will have to do a side-by-side comparison of ffmpeg and VirtualDub using XVID and see if there is a noticable difference. I suspect there will be because I haven't been impressed with the results I have got from ffmpeg.

Jittery Output from ffmpeg

Has anyone experienced jittery output from ffmpeg? I've used it successfully for several compressions, but last night I tried several different settings (video bitrates of 800 and 600, audio bitrates of 128 and 192) and it consistently produced jittery results for this one particular show.

Thanks in advance for any help.

If you havent fixed this yet, go grab Cupra's build. It worked much better for me and a few others.

Do a search of his posts for more info. Here are some direct links to necessary files:

http://members.liwest.at/cupra/xvidcore.dll

Hope this helps!

Compression not working for me

I am using Cayar's STV and I am trying to compress my recorded shows but so far it ain't working.

My problem at this time is that I am not getting any xml files created in the jobs folder.

Compression is turned on and the job and target folders are properly setup.

Help would be appreciated. By the way, is there a document somewhere that clearly describes how to install ffmpeg and interface to Cayar's STV?

Did you change the job folder in detailed setup?
The job folder my STV sets up is not going to be the same job folder you will see looking at directions in this thread so you will need to change one or the other.

Yes I did, and the target folder as well. I'm confused about the location of the various ffmpeg components. Right now everything is in "C:\Program Files\Frey Technologies\SageTV\Compressor". Is this right?

After reading through 15 pages of this thread I was able to get compress to work /w cayars STV. Now, how do I setup SageTV to import this .avi file so that commercial skip and closed caption information is retained?

If I rename the file to .mpg and replace original file, SageTV seems to open another window when playing my divx. Should I configure a different decoder?

"Compress" Pickup Fix

I don't know how this code that I found in another thread and have done some maintenance on compares with what is being discussed here but maybe some of you would find it of use:

Well, there goes a whole afternoon shot.

I can't fid a version of FFMPEG that will decode both HDTV MPEG2 Video (the versions in this thread do) and the AC3 audio that accompanies the video (the 2-25-2005 on video help does).

So then I switched to VirtualDub. VirtualDubMpeg2 can do the video, but it looks like only the 1.6 version does Ac3 and I can't find a MOD or MPEG version that is available with AC3 support. Anyone?

You can compile in support for AC3 audio. I've done it and it works great.

Basically you need to compile the latest ffmpeg source using MinGW / Msys and make sure you supply:

--enable-a52

as one of the options to the configure command.

Let me know if anyone needs help doing this.
