If that's the trade off I will take it since that could be developed now - just as Slugger sis before.

I agree although to reliably work with a lot of Android devices transcoding to h.264 is going to be needed.

I switched to Tivo last spring but I still run a SageTV server for clear QAM programs that I watch on my PC. Also have a huge library that I've recorded over almost 7 years.

Would love to see OS X client software (I have to run the client i Win 8 in Parallels), IOS app, and Android apps.

Great news on the open source software!

Great news Jeff!

Do you know which version will be open sourced? Will it be the SageTV version everyone on this forum has been using? Or will it be the current Google-SageTV version (that I assume is still being actively developed by Google)?

This just made my day!

Can't wait to see what the future brings. The best part will be no more living in fear that one day my setup will just stop working. The bad part is that I will be tempted to mess with a system that's been running great.

Bring it on!

wow...

Sage still running pretty well for me, but can't wait to see some new options.

I have next to no coding skills, but would be happy to chip in for a bounty for something or other when we get to that point.

thanks Jeff!

Out of curiosity, Jeff, are you still using SageTV v7 at home? Or did Google set up some way for you to use Google Fiber TV?

This is really great news. I wasn't expecting this. Thanks for pushing for this, Jeff. I'm sure you must have worked hard making the case for this.

An open question: ideally, what would you like to see come of this? Do you want to see incremental improvements to SageTV v7 with some new clients? Or would you like to see better integration with other media software, like Kodi and Plex?

Plex/Kodi integration would benefit from development going on there, although I don't think we've seen great results with NextPVR or Myth. I'd love to see full-featured SageTV apps for Android devices and media streamers that support Plex and Netflix apps.

I'd be happy to pay for guide data to have an "maintained" SageTV.

Well right now we've got enough info/access via the SageTV API to "fully" integrate with Kodi (Plex is another issue all together), although an actively developed SageTV would potentially inspire work on that front.

What would I like to see? I'd like to see some further development of the extender platform, maybe (better) integrated movie metadata. I've really been liking Kodi, well technically XBMC, haven't upgraded to Kodi yet, but at the same time, it's just nothing compared to SageTV for TV.

While it would be nice to keep getting free guide data from Google, when SageTV is open-sourced (and thereby becomes non-commercial), it should qualify for schedules direct use.

http://www.schedulesdirect.org/

<edit>
Or it could just incorpoate the already existing sagetv-sdepg pluging I just saw was approved.
</edit>

Well.. I may be holding on to the rest of my sagetv gear in this case. Of course this comes just after I sell of my stash of HD200's. Oh well, I think at this point the family would have a hard time going back and losing the streaming options we have with Roku's now... so I'll hang out awhile longer to see if anything comes of non-proprietary streamer/extender options.

My Wife and I were discussing how google was never going to open source STV and whether it was time to start working on an alternative. Now, I see this. Way to go Jeff and Thank You!

I'm really excited about this, but I'm truly hoping it's not too little, too late. Are any devs seriously considering coming back as a result of this announcement? I'm ok paying for EPG data, if that's what it takes, but if no skilled devs (you know who you are!) pick up the torch, this could be much ado about nothing.

So, any devs out there considering a return? Bueller? Bueller?

This is a great day.
I'm sure there's a lot of low-level code to work on, too.

that does seem to go hand in hand with Slugger's recent comments, and no one has stepped up yet on that issue, have they?

otherwise, great news
