There was some work done many years ago that would allow you to view some stuff in SageTV using Playon. It might even still work. But it isn't ideal - and you are right that the streaming companies would keep changing their API to foil this.

The whole thing with # of guests on the forums has been weird for many years...it's nothing recent. I don't know exactly how it tracks that...but it doesn't seem all that accurate to me.

I know at least Opus4 and myself check on the forums from time to time.

I don't have any false illusions about Sage being a competitive product going forward. But I do think it can remain viable, if nothing more than for hobbyists who still appreciate the value of free TV. And for that alone the forum will also have value.

Right now, I'm most concerned about keeping the website running. With the exodus of long-time members, I'm offering to volunteer to help in maintaining the site. It'd be nice to know we have a couple active moderators and a site admin or two, who have the time when trouble arises.

With a few volunteers, we can address simple problems, but keep you guys in mind for anything more serious.

I'm guessing with what little activity this site generates, it may very well just 'run itself'. Until it doesn't.

That app I was messing with seems to have done a decent job of copying the entire site to a hard drive. I clicked a few, random links, and most threads were there from what i could tell. Granted, I’m not sure how to have it update threads which are ongoing, but I assume there’s a way. Good news in case the forums go down temporarily and you need older links to solve a problem.

I’m in the process of discovery. Will post more when I feel confident as to what’s going on. Some of the structure building may need work, aka how are replies cataloged. So far, the links and photo attachments on many threads checked are there. But bear in mind I don’t really know how to use the software.

First UPDATE: my first run at saving the site ate up 1.5GB approx. However, somethings didn't get saved, like Avatars and certain responses to thread questions. Looking at the "OPTIONS" settings to see if I might understand what to select/not select. If anyone with actual programming smarts wants to chime in, install the program and take a look at "Set Options" under "Preferences and mirror options" when you set up a new project. I think this is where all the secrets are...

I'll try to set it up & give it a try also. In addition to a need to preserve existing content, I see a need for an alternate way for users to contact one another and share info about ways of regrouping. My guess is that mirroring the site won't provide a contact means, so setting up a backup list/board for at least the purpose of enabling contact if this site goes down and can't be brought back up seems desirable. Various platforms have already been discussed here, so I won't repeat, but perhaps work toward a consensus for such a method. Or maybe someone just start something up and those who wish to do so can sign up for it.

I for one use Sage as my main video recording/playback platform. Streaming is a distant second, and I primarily use PlayOn with streaming because I like to have my own copies of keeper-shows rather than trust them to always be available to stream.

As for adding admins/moderators to this site to help keep it going, it would be helpful if those in the know could post some info about what skills, knowledge, and time-commitments would be necessary for helping in that capacity.

A couple of us communicated over at github when Jeff was cleaning up the site last week. There is still a Facebook page that’s up, but no one seems to use it.

HTTrack works well but I'd caution anyone casually using it to look at your throttling settings carefully. If you don't throttle it down it from the wide open defaults, it can bottleneck a web site and sort of act like a DDOS attack. Not good for the users here while it's running.

It has a very good help file, but I've found good settings recommendations on the individual help pages. For example, after you create the project name and enter the site URL, click the "set options" button. The new dialog box has 11 tabs. If you click help on "each" different tab, they have very good recommendations on what setting to use so as not to overwhelm a web site.

Pay particular attention to the limits and flow control tabs.

If you read through the FAQ's etc. the author even recommends not running during the times when users are hitting a site, etc. The author says in many places to be careful not to overwhelm sites with this tool.

Not saying that anyone in this thread hasn't already read in the docs what I've mentioned above. I'm just throwing this out for future readers that might want to use this.

Thanks - good to see someone is familiar with it? If you’d like to suggest some settings which BOTH prevents throttling AND grabs most of the site, that would be great, as I’m very green with it. I started my latest grab at 9pm last night, just in case. A lot of those options under the 11 tabs are too technical for me, even after reading thru them. A pro-user’s help would be great

LOL, I'm not a user of it at all, but I did read all the docs and the FAQ's out of curiosity and was impressed by how the author went above and beyond to recommend caution with its use. Part of the settings will depend on your own local environment. The help file I mentioned above gives suggested settings values to use and why for each tab.

If it were me, I'd look to the Sage site admins for their preferences of what settings to use. I don't want to speak for them.

So now I'm downloading the entire Internet. Just ~1,200 Petabytes to go. For some reason it's all p0rn sites so far, oh wait, that IS the Internet.
