OMG: # Playback with Commercial skip and .smi Closed captions should now work also for .avi files (commercial detect still needs the original .mpg)
That's the exact feature I was wanting . NOW I can Comskip the Wife's shows, then compress them. NO MORE CSI/In A Fix/Forensic Files overrunning my storage . Now I just need to run out and get another 160g+ drive to hold all those compressed shows...

broderp,
Unlike BeyondTV (is that a taboo word here?), SageTV does not have the inate ability to analyze/modify the shows it records. This lack of built in functionality has caused the creation/use of certain "stand-alone" programs. For example, comskip to detect commercials, ffmpeg to compress shows, and mpg2srt to get the closed captioning (I'm sure there are others that I've not mentioned, but you get the idea). These are all completely seperate programs that do only one thing. The major benifit of Sage over BeyondTV (IMHO) is that Sage is extensible with Studio (there are many threads about the masses not having studio, so let's save that discussion for one of those threads ). Hence the variety of custom STV's available. These custom STV's can make use of the special functionality from those stand-alone programs. Here's the catch: Custom STV's, comskip, ffmpeg, and mpg2srt are all developed/maintained by different people that have no official relation to each other. Since they are all different "projects", they normally won't be included together. Regarding the specific question of the Nielm STV including "comskip", it may be more accurate to say the the Nielm STV "works with" comskip. Normally it won't matter what version of comskip you use with any of the STV's. However, in this specific situation, comskip .30 and earlier could not handle spaces in the paths. If there are no spaces in the path to comskip or your video files, then it is a non-issue for you. But, if there are, then upgrading comskip will prevent any potential problems. Regarding your specific case of comskip not doing anything for you then the combination of Nielm 1.4 and comskip .31 might fix your problem. If I was unclear, please let me know and I'll try to clarify. Jere *edited to remove references to WRS*

Actually, WRS is a pure java library and runs in SageTV's process, so technically it is not stand-alone, but this is neither here nor there and shouldn't detract from the points made about different people developing different pet projects.

1. Comskip 2. Edit out the commercials (ala SageRedo/VideoRedo?) 3. Compress the resulting file. 4. Replace the original file with that of the comskipped/compressed file. -Jason |

My ReplayTV used to regularly become confused by Law and Order scene changes, resulting in false positives.
Is comskip so reliable that you guys are willing to chop out the supposed commercials and lose the original file? If so, then (a) wow!; (b) I might have to start using it! |

I don't nessecarily need it to cut the commercials automatically, just comskip & compress. As long as Sage can still skip the commercials on a compressed file, that's fine by me. Cuts out a step. Now if I was going to be keeping those episodes for a long time, sure, killl those commercials, but she usually deletes them after watching, unless it's something I want to see as well...

I just got comercial skip working the other day and I have been very pleased so far. Comskip missed a couple commercials, but so far it has not marked any show time as a commercial. Thank you for the option not to run comskip on certain channels. I am running an older machine and comskip on a 2.5 hour movie takes forever.
Thanks goto everyone who has dedicated so much of their own time to making my PVR a dream come true. This includes Jeff and Dan who made a good product that is able to be customized, and of course all the community members like MlbDude, Salsbst, Nielm, Malore... Please don't be offended if I missed your name, That list could go on for a while. I for one really appreciate everyones effort and I am making good use of Nielm's STV and the weather suite and Comskip. Now if all those pesky little PVR-350 problems could be solved, I would be all set.

Writing code to edit mpg's is not easy, but there is already a module (here) to convert comskip .txt files into a videoredo cut list...
cutting automatically would be IMHO a bad idea given that comskip is not 100% reliable! Last edited by nielm; 09-28-2004 at 12:40 PM. |

Plus, your system will barely be able to keep up with your recordings. If your system runs anything like mine, I get about 12 hours of new TV per day, and even being on the edge with my numbers, it would take 16.2 hours to recompress those 10.8 hours of programing, and 12 hrs would take about 1.2 hrs to commercial detect, so that only leaves 6.6 hrs per day where my system isn't running at full throttle. That is some SERIOUS work on a system that runs 24/7. Maybe I need to make a dual-xeon server box.... PS all numbers based on my AMD 2600+ box. |

I finally switched from Malore and I really like it. I dont have the weather running yet, but oh well.... :-)
The commercial advance is really cool though. I'm only wondering, is there any way to automtically run commerical advance on all recordings I have and on all the new recorded ones? I have background Commercial Processing enabled, but it doesnt seem to do anything. Do I need to sleep sage or something? cause i never put it to sleep. :-/ |

Questions: 1 - How do I apply this setting?, "Added dynamic menu option DontScaleItems to limit menus to 6/7 items per page" ... and 2 - What is the difference between RSS and RSS2? Oh, also is there and updated "Internal Screen Commands" list?? Thanks!, T. Last edited by mightyt; 09-28-2004 at 07:00 PM. |

I am currently using mlbdude's 2 pane recording views and I think I have updated correctly to 1.4. Am I supposed to be seeing an option to commercial detect when viewing my recording details? I still get it in Malore's. I thought that was included in the update.

I just updated to Nielm STV 1.4 and Comskip .31 and now my diskpace widget is not reporting how much space I need for the next 48 hours of recording. I miss it already.

How bout this one: the background recording option thing. What is that for? Any downsides to that option if set true?
