Using a DirecTV HRMC-15 remote with Hauppauge IR receiver

This remote can be programmed to control most TVs... is it able to talk to the Hauppauge IR receiver too?

Is this possible?

Thanks!

That would probably depend on how it is programmed -- do you simply select from an internal list of devices, do you actually teach the codes to the remote, or what?

You select from list of brands and it gives you the 3 digit codes for them.. and you pick through them and program them into the remote under the "TV" button

I read places that the Hauppauge is similar to Phillips and Marantz or something.. but I tried all those. I'm assuming I'd have to do something more complex?

Uh, yeah. If they haven't added the Hauppuage remotes as devices you can select, it would be a little more complex in this case. The Hauppauge IR receiver uses the same IR protocol that some Philips devices use, but none of them that I know of use the exact same ones as the Hauppauge remote.

Do you just pick from TVs, or does it also operate other devices too? The reason I ask is that TVs usually don't have that many remote buttons, so you would be better off starting with something that has more buttons.

Essentially, if you can't program/teach the remote directly, you would end up doing what I did for my MX-700 remote: try many Philips devices, checking to see which ones are recognized by the Hauppauge IR receiver, noting which system codes and command codes are used -- all with trial and error. Then, you would pick the device that sets the most usable buttons & edit the Hauppauge irremote.ini to make use of those codes that you found. It is a real PITA process.

If you are real cheap, like me, then you _might_ be able to make that remote work. Otherwise, you may be better off finding a different solution using either a different remote for that receiver or a different receiver that is more versatile.
