I originally came back to this thread to post the following, which is a post from Meedio's Pablo after LAST year's CES:
"....CES also showed that there are many, many devices (not just PC's) and set-top-boxes that are using Windows XP embedded - which could also run myHTPC or H2. There is room in this category for non-linux applications. " It's just more evidence why Sage is targeting the embedded (and thus OEM) market. (Linux, Windows, or otherwise). Anyone in their shoes must've seen the potential.. And it makes me wonder, where's the Meedio Linux port? (I don't want one; their TV work has probably already detracted from dev of the MP3 management system..) (The rest of that thread, which isn't very interesting, is here: http://www.meedio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=38759#38759) |

It looks like Tivo is trying to catch up to the openess of HTPCs:

Slight detour, since we've had so much TIVO talk already.

Just to be clear. I'm interested in removing thw encryption so I can use the files with my personal setup, like SageTV or burn/archive to DVD without farther quality loss. Even if the unwrapped file is an mpeg2, it may contian an embedded watermark in the recording with your Tivo's service number. So anyone thinking of sharing such files should be carefull. Anyway, I now return you to your regularly scheduled topic. |

I don't mean to be confrontational but why even bother with this? Once you couldn't patch the kernel and before the bootstrap solution I just went back to a SA Series I and easy extraction. The more 'advanced' features of the Series 2 were easily smoked when I found Sage which made extraction a non-issue. I keep my Tivo mostly for guests and its transport is better for sports but its just not where I record something I want to archive.
I always thought Tivo2go was for people who didn't realize they could use Sage, MCE et al for an easy mpeg. I know you're smart guy which is why I am curious as to whether you see an upside or if it's just the challenge (I certainly understand that). peace . . . Quote:

No offense/confrontation taken. :)
As for series 1 versus 2...
I only have one Series 2 Tivo(40Hr upgraded with 120GB HD). From what little I remember from my Tivo mod days series 1 is more hack friendly. That was along time ago so I can't remember all the specifics. As for Tivo2Go... I agree the usefullness of this feature is very limited. Slow tranfers being just one of the obvious ones depending on your model's USB port, not to mention that they don't support USB2 in this current update IIRC. I do have a few shows stored on my Tivo that I wish to save. They were recorded before I added all my tuners(to SageTV) or simply just overlooked and now only exist on my Tivo(with the upgraded HD I can keep shows for a long time, especially with Sage now doing the real PVR work). I originally intened to re-record these shows with Sage when they aired again. Tivo2go should give me another option. In truth though you pretty much nailled it, with it mostly being a challenge/curiousity. It was much the same thing with my Xbox and XBMP and then XBMC. I guess I like to see how things work and how far they can be taken. I too keep the Tivo mainly for guests, and also my wife still tends to prefer Tivo's simplicity for simply watching TV. She thinks she has bad luck(she's convinced there's a self destuct key) with computers so she hesitates to use Sage, since it's running on a computer. Yes, she knows Tivo uses Linux, but to her the Tivo is an appliance not a computer. It's that pyschological hurdle that needs to be over come. She's mostly there with the Mods I made to the SageTV UI, but she "knows" it's a computer. I'm hoping the new HTPC style case and totally dedicated HTPC will allow her to transition fully, since it will appear to be a "normal" electronic/AV device on our rack.EDIT>Just to clarify I'm referring to a HTPC I'm building not the new Sage Linux box<EDIT /justme Last edited by justme; 01-11-2005 at 07:07 AM. |

I just knew it would make sense when I heard it
We're actually in very similar positions, I just have the Series I so 1) I don't have the problem (good) but then I guess I don't get to play with the new Tivo2Go solution (bad). When I switched to Sage as my primary device I too left a ton of stuff on Tivo. I ALSO keep stuff a very long time its just easy to get off and I just haven't bothered because it as good a place to store 100 gig as any. I still have the whole last season of Enterprise on it for example. You've obviously seen a lot of solutions so I am curious. What's your new box going to be like? peace . . . Quote:
