Skyh13 -

I had some problems doing a new fresh install of SageTV 7.1.9 and getting firewire to show up correctly in Sage. This very well could have been an issue exclusive to me. I downgraded to to an earlier version of Sage installed firewire then upgraded to in steps to 7.1.9 (I went back to the RC of 7.0.23)
I posted about this issue a page or 2 back.

When I was first attempting to install firewire a few years ago, I downloaded the PDF and tried to copy and paste the MMC\Encoders section from the PDF into the Sage.properties file. This didn't work for me _ I seem to remember that no tuner showed up for firewire or 1394.

What I did then was to find another source for the MMC/Encoders section. There are a couple of posts within this thread that contain the lines needed (yeah, I know this thread is outta control and I don't have the page or post number to give you)
Using the lines from the thread worked for me rather then the lines from the PDF file. YMMV.

I copied the following from a post by DFA on page 5 (I think) of this thread. You may need to edit for port (if not using :6969)

Ok, so hopefully someone else has done this with linux.

I finally upgraded from stone age and got a digital receiver (Comcast turned off analog last week) and am trying to figure out the firewire (until I can get an HDHR-Prime). I got it connected and enabled firewire in the Sage.properties. I goto setup the sources and it finds 2 sources (although even with the firewire unplugged, it finds one source, which I find quite odd), so it doesn't matter which tuner I choose, I get the same results. I choose a tuner and it takes me to a screen that asks me to click "TV Tuner" and I click it and then it tries to tune and hangs. And that's it. It hangs forever. I have to 'kill -9 xxxx' on the server and then restart sagetv (/opt/sagetv/server/stopsage won't stop it because it won't respond).

I'm not sure what to do. I saw another thread about getting stuck on trying to tune ch0, but I couldn't find the solution. That appears to be what I was seeing (see logs below). I have pasted in some debug logs just before the thing started spewing repeated logs.

Any help is appreciated!

Wow.. No activity on this thread for a while!!!

I'm down to one firewire recording STB box and have a Prime to take care of the rest. I want to upgrade sage to a 64 bit machine but I don't necessarily want to give up the firewire tuner.

It seems like it's already setup as a network encoder... Could I move the
firewire connected STB to a different 32bit machine and use a 64bit machine to
run sage which would connect to the 32 bit machine as a network encoder?

I don't fancy having another machine on 24/7 just for one encoder... I also don't want to lose this encoder if don't have to.

I wonder if I could use slugger's SJQ to wake up the machine if it sensed that it needed another tuner...

Jim

You can just run SGraphRecorder on the 32 bit machine and change the IP in the sage.properties(See Below) on the server to point to the IP that SGraphRecorder is running. As long as you are using UNC recordings Path it will work...

mmc/encoders/12346/encoding_host=127.0.0.1\:6969

If you are not using UNC paths you will get NO SIGNAL.

I've completely forgot how this all works.

Why does UNC paths matter?

Does SGR record the file to a UNC drive?
Or does it stream it over the internet to the sage server?

Because if you do not use UNC paths it will try to write to the local drive... It will work with mapped drives though.

I just recently did this when I moved my server to 64 bit .... and I do not use UNC paths and kept getting NO Signal. I had to map the drive letters to the 32 bit pc.

I posted detailed instructions on this thread long ago..
You should be able to follow them step by step.

You should consider waiting for the Echo to come out and abandon the approach entirely and use HDHR Prime with WMC.

IR tuning gets a bad rap, but I have two STBs controlled by FW and one by IR using a USB-UIRT and IR tuning failures are very rare. Maybe you are better off buying a USB UIRT and using IR?

One other option could be to have your 64 bit Sage PC run a process that has your 32 bit PC to tune the channel, although this may be overkill. You can change the exe file in the registry parameter from channelw.exe to something else say, tune32.bat, which could run channelw.exe on your 32 bit PC and pass e channel num as a parameter. I don't know exactly how this would work but it should work in a Rube Goldberg kind of way.

I use it for recording as well as tuning... And I already have a usb-uirt!

I wonder if I could run a 32 bit VM within the 64 machine... hmm... Might have to upgrade the processor for that!

That's more for using an HDPVR.. But thanks anyway.. My issues will probably be with SGR.. which all the help should be buried in this thread anyway...

Do I really want to reinstall Sage on a 64bit machine??

Coincidentally.. As I was playing with this again I discovered that my firewire wasn't working anyway. I turns out I removed my "D" drive a while ago and replaced it with an "F" drive.. The graph filters relied on some dump file on the "D" drive. I did this probably 6ish months ago.. and I just noticed it now!

I just chucked off the failed recordings as a glitch in Sage and rebooted!
I guess my 3 prime tuners and 2 HDHR tuners are enough for most of my recording needs... Do I really need the firewire recording?? I do have to say that the firewire is still more stable than the Prime through SageDCT!
I guess that's why I want to keep it around.. especially now that it's working again!

Jim

If you need the tools I have them in a zip file.

Thanks! But it's already running on a win7 machine. I just need to make it a seperate win7 machine either through a seperate machine or a VM..

Thanks though.. The easy thing to do would be to give up on Firewire recording!

Do I really want to give up a week of my life reinstalling the OS and getting Sage work like it is now!

Exactly the right question. I still have 2 firewire tuned and captured via HDPVR for the couple channels that are not 'copy freely' that require a STB to tune/capture. But the need is very rare.

All of that will be moot with WMC as you can record all channels 'copy freely' or not. And with the Ceton Echo hopefully the remote extender experience will rock. At that point why not just use a simple to put together WMC that has only HDHR Prime?

Of course that is for cable tuning... folks with satellite needs will have it a little tougher... but I believe that DVBLink is recommended for that with WMC?

Anyone have experience with that? Curious .... someday I might use Satellite

Until Sage is completely dead and no longer functioning what so ever or incredibly unreliable... I'll stick with it. I doubt WMC can come close to all the features of Sage.

But I am paying attention to the echo...

You are like the knight in Monty Python...

WMC7 is quite good - in fact better in many ways.
The real problem was the terrible extender support / limitations that hooefully the Echo will solve.

Of course I will not switch until I can prove the value - as my old friend sagetv is both reliable and good

Comcast moving channels to 4 digits!

Starting in mid October Comcast is moving a BUNCH of channels to 1000+. Is there anything I need to do other than changing the # of digits in the channel changing section?

2nd question..... can I just do it now and not have to remember to do it next month?

Using 2 HD-PVR's and 2 Comcast HD STB's. All I do is channel changing via FW and I record to the HD-PVR's.
