after an inquiry sent to a tech at sage, i was told that, although unsupported, we can use a second instance of sagetv as a networked tuner--thus eliminating the need for sagerecorder/sage client (and also providing for tuner support that the sage recorder does not--PVR 150 for example). Will this be fully supported in 3.0 and how can we do it now?
thanks JUC |

One fast question:
will the media extender be able to play divx/xvid/wmv files (transcoder), or will it be limited to mpegs ? |

Then on the new machine you set enable_encoding_server=true in the properties file. Then you would follows the basic directions here for SageRecorder but you use the new SageTV machine instead. http://www.sage.tv/2_papers/NetworkEncoderSetup.txt |

Thanks very much for the update Dan !
I am slightly (okay, make that "VERY" ) disappointed though that OTA HDTV support doesn't seem to be as high a priority in the near future for Sage. |

Thats the only reason I asked about it and I am submitting another one right now I would not be really "pushing" the issue but other apps can do VMR9 just fine I really was just hoping you would give a statement as what will be changed or fixed to give smooth playback for VMR9 software decoding users |

If I have a license for Windows, will I be able to run the Linux version for no additional charge? I would like to experiment with a Linux based PVR. Then again, wait..... Linux is only for OEM's I think.... I think I answered my own question!

I have seen many many comments on AVSForum where people compared Sage to Windows Media Center 2005 and gave a nod to Media Center simply because of HDTV support. I do own Media Center and use HDTV recording with that, but I hate Microsoft's DVR-MS cr@p and the fact that it can't be handled by any regular MPEG2 processing program ! I would really love if Sage supports HDTV so that I can consolidate all my PVR needs into one single app and move all of my 1.6TB storage into the same machine |

Well, let me be the first to volunteer for the linux beta test program when it starts. I think getting into this as an OEM is something to consider.

Dan,
I have a question about closed captions. First, let me explain the two different ways that PVR software deals with closed captions so everyone knows what I'm talking about. One way - the way that Sage does it currently - involves the drivers for the cards themselves recording the closed captioned data. The second way - the way Microsoft does it - involves software decoding line 21 of the video and storing it. I recently emailed Hauppauge tech support and they gave me a great, detailed response on closed captions. The only cards that do closed captions through the drivers are the 250 and 350. The new cards will not do closed captions (150, 500) through drivers. The Plextor will never do closed captions through drivers either. Using software, closed captions can be captured for virtually all cards. It seems to me that it's sort of been decided for the future that they way to handle closed captions is through software. If you continue to do closed captions the way you do it now, only a limited number of setups will be able to do closed captions. Are you planning to switch to software closed caption capture? This information would be helpful to people like me, who would like to buy something like the PVR-500, but want closed captions. If I thought that software closed captions were probably coming in the future, I'd go ahead and buy the PVR-500. |

I am totally with you on this zz5... This has been something that has been an incredible disappointment for me aswell. It seems that there is no importance placed on Closed Captions.
I would really like native closed caption support for any capture card too, just like MCE. I'd also like to be able to map a button on my remote to enable/disable it. Apparently the hardware of the 150/500 is capable of supporting CC in the same sorta way as the 250/350 but the driver development from hauppauge is slow. I've wanted to take advantage of these new lower priced cards too, but without CC they are useless to me. |

Cayars is working on this (little bit here and there). I happen to know this for a fact. What I plan on doing for the ShowCenter as a first release is a "partial" interface. What I mean by this is that you'll be able to access TV Recordings and Archived material via a ShowCenter/SageTV interface. No changes will be made to the picture, music or normal ShowCenter Movies since these can easily duplicate what SageTV does for pictures, music & Imported videos. I also won't be messing with the OSD anytime soon as I can't get an SDK for the box without paying big bucks for it.
So in reality what I plan on doing for the ShowCenter in the near fute is bringing the recording screen to it. At least for the first release. |

HDTV Support

I realize that solutions such as Fusion3 and ATI's HDTV Wonder would be processor intensive, but the HTPC I'm planning on building is going to be more than capable. It may be the price we have to pay (building a fast PC). |

new MyHD 130 can do QAM "cable" HDTV
but dissappointed not to see HDMI added instead of DVI again and I changed to 720p and I am having fewer issues but still not completely there and the feild frame issue is back |
