I understand release dates slipping... but usually some official word is also given as to why and a new date is given.

Yup... Over the last year or so I've just resigned myself to the fact that Frey's communication with their customers SUCKS BIG TIME.

And don't get started about 'everyone' complaining when advertised release dates are not met. That is a poor excuse to not communicate anything with their customers. That only really happens when the release date comes and goes and they never bother to release an UPDATE as to the status.

But whatever, that is Frey's business model now... Don't tell the customer anything. We either have to live with it, or find a new product to use I guess.

I for one will keep using it, as I think it is VERY good at what it does. I just won't expect any communication from Frey.

Jason

poor customer service is something people SHOULD whine about. Otherwise it never gets better.

You have to come to expect some whining about release (or not) dates! Isn't that what forums were invented for?

You almost begin to wonder how Frey even can stay alive (financially that is)... Do they really sell that much SageTV's to make a real living out of it?

I almost begin to wonder "IF" Frey is still alive... Hearing anything from Frey is almost as bad as expecting to hear from Cayar's again....

Don't get me wrong, I think the froum is in excellent hands with Opus here (and I hope he doesn't dissappear too). But the lack of program updates as well as the lack of updates on the updates makes me wonder how much resources Frey's has left...

I hope I'm wrong and when 3.0 comes out it will be like it was in here a year ago when I started using SageTV. But right now I agree with Korben_Dallas that this place is like a morgue

I suppose you could say that activity continues... Job Openings with Frey Technologies were filled.

I hope they hired alot of people instead of downgrading the people they had.
Don't get me wrong. I am not trying to be a pessimist. I know that they could be doing alot behind the scenes. I think they are a great company with a great product and I would use this software for a long time as it is NOW. I just miss the frequent updates/development that used to flow in the forum and I hope it returns soon.

Devil's advocate suppositions

First, let me start by saying I agree 100% with those that believe Frey should communicate something to the devoted user base here on the forums. Regardless...

MY bet is that we, the power-users of SageTV, are NOT the main (long-term) target user base, NOT their main (long-term) source of income, and NOT in their (long-term) plans. Even though I haven't spent much time combing the forums recently, my guess is that Frey is out to develop a base software environment that can be customized by value added resellers, distributors, and private-labellers. Being middleware and supporting THOSE users is where their bread and butter lies. They hardly have the interest (never mind resources or business plan) to build their company around us, the high feature demanding, yet low income stream, bleeding edge user base.

I think our value to them comes in the resources we provide for our own selfish pursuits. We are their beta testers, feature adders, support desk, and documentation team, and PAY for the privilege. This isn't a gripe. Far from. It's smart business on their side. Been there; done that.

They are probably an underfunded company, looking to do big things. As a result, time frames will be missed. Given the punitive nature of the forum's expectations (SET by Frey, I know), they are probably in a no-win situation, either way, by telling us the "bad" news or not. NOT telling the bad news, avoids the bad publicity they might officially receive, so that might be the reason they say nothing.

For me, v2.2.8, Cayars, comskip, web server, and MVP client serve all my needs. While the allure of potential customization is SO appealing (and I finally have so much time and many ideas over here), I'll take the glass half full approach, because I really like the HTPC product I have and use.

6 days left..

Imagine the sagetv coders are coding nonstop these last 6 days to push 3.0 out, although it's still filled with bugs. Then we all bashed them for releasing crappy upgrades. Then 6 months later 3.1 debuts with all bugs fixed, then we'd say they should've delayed it 6 months and released it bugs free instead.

but with that said... there better be 3.0 in 6 days or we'll raise hell.

You raise hell! I'll just bring heaven down on em.

LOL couldn't resist.

As for the crappy upgrades, It is beta afterall bugs and crappy versions are to be expected but not in the final product. So I won't and nobody else should mind the bugs other than to report them so they get fixed. Otherwise they should keep using the current release till version 3 gets out of beta all fixed and hopefully bug free or at least free of all bugs found by the beta testers. Of course i do want it to be in a beta state when it comes out and not still in an alpha state so I'd rather miss the date than get a alpha product.

Seriously on the date if their going to miss it I wont mind as long as they let us know about it that way were not sitting here waiting for something that isn't going to show for another month or so. That would just be rude and dissapointing. Some people though are going to complain anyway and thats to be expected but the majority of us though will be happy to finally get to play with it and see what's new in it as well as what it can do.
Though i do understand that with a market that is so up and comming with the compatition for the market like Beyond, MCE, GBPVR etc, That it may not be a good idea to advertise possible problems they maybe having. But it's also not a good idea to leave the people in the dark like this so they end up griping and whining about it on the forums which just ends up doing the same thing that they were trying to avoid by not saying anything in the first place namely advertising problems with the product.

Having said that though im thinking it may end up being a july release myself but who knows.

I'll be waiting and checking the forums for the next 6 days hoping we get it before summer starts but im not putting all my hopes on that though so that way I won't be so disapointed and be less prone to jump on the boards ranting if it doesn't come out by then.

Ahh, the first day of summer and still no update. Are you suprised? I'm not.

At the very least I expect someone to step in today to tell how progress is going. Maybe throw us a screenshot or ten. I realize that it must be difficult to program something like this, but to keep your client base in the blind is mind boggling to me. My fingers are crossed for an update still.

If nothing happens today I think it's time I consider some of the alternatives out there. As much as I love Sage, I don't like the tweaking that goes along with it. With 3.0 I really hope some of the major problems, like VMR playback, are fixed with it. I can't wait to see what they have in store for us.

I fired off a nice respectful email (mostly) requesting SOME word to support... maybe we'll get SOMETHING to keep us happy while we wait. But I agree, no word at all is just bad policy.

General 3.0 Release information:
- Online Scheduling will be available for any SageTV 3.0 product
- Enhanced User Interface
- Enhanced Configuration Wizard allowing more setup to be accomplished within the Setup Wizard
- Expansion of SageTV to Linux and Media Extenders in addition to Windows
In the initial post on this thread they announced there would be an enhanced UI. That's actually one of the things I'm really looking forward too. Hopefully it's easily customizable too.

Well all I can say is that Directv is starting to look real good if they make good on the whole house system they hyped up at the begining of the year.

I like Sage, but I would also like to be able to record HD pay channels in HD
