Thanks Stanger89. That's about the way I understand it but don't think I could have said it.
Since this thread is focused on stuttering, I wanted to mention something but failed to in my previous post. I can reliably produce the herky-jerkys when cycling my system through an S3 suspend / resume cycle. After coming back from suspend, Sage will always be stuttery. A shutdown and restart of Sage clears it. I now have Girder do that automatically but is just a work around. DFA

Item number 1 fixed it for me. I am running Java 1.4 and running Sage as a service. Geforce Video card with the Hauppauge decoder.

Is the stuttering that is refered to in this thread related to just playback or does it also include recording problems?
I see occassional skips or hiccups. I get a single hiccup every 5 minutes or so. I also see the stutters if I watch the recording in Zoom Player or Windows Media player so I believe my problem is on the recording side, not the playback. In SageTV 2.0 I never saw this problem. I'm not running as a service and I've done #1 and #2 but haven't yet had time to watch any recordings done after making the changes. I did report this bug to Frey. Thanks, Greg

The 1.5 Java worked for me. I am still having high CPU and sluggishness after stopping video playback, but it is better.

I have upgraded my SageTV system to an AMD XP 3200+ and 1 GB ram. SageTV should have no issues streaming recordings to disk since all of my disks are plenty fast enough. It would be nice if SageTV was smart enougho record as few streams to a single hard drive as possible, but even without it there should no problem since when I set up a program that just beats on my recording hard drive and causes huge CPU usage no problems occurr during recordings, but if I start a local SageTVClient instance or a remote SageTVClient instance I get problems with hiccups in recordings. Frankly if SageTV can not handle recordings and client activity then the two functions should be seperated. Just my rant. John

Oh yeah.
I tried 1 and 3 and I still get issues with hiccups in the recordings. I have not had any issues with stuttering in playback since I bump up the disk read buffers from 2MB to 32MB on all my clients and the server. John |

I've done all three and I still get the stutters in my recordings also.

This stuttering problem does NOT occur in WMP at all using the Nvidia decoders so seems logical to me the problem must be in SAGE; I mean just basing it on the evidence..Wheemer, does it work OK for you in WMP as well? I know you have mentioned the same stuttering problems I have myself been experiencing?
Thanks, -Dan Quote:

The problem is reduced by not running service mode but minor, allmost unnoticeable hiccups still occur every 2-3 secs.
This is after java 1.5 and boosting sagetv priority. |

or we could get exclusive full screen and eliminate it completely.

I switched to overlay and my video doesn't hiccup anymore - I think maybe my p3/800 & fx5200 just doesn't have enough horsepower for vmr? None of Narflex's 3 suggestions affected me.

OK. I am running 2.2.4 for a few days now.
The issue with hicups is much less noticeable if one monitors memory usage. I had the worst incident while memory utilisation was near(490Mb) of the 512Mb. After some cleaning up, it is down to 310Mb and the hiccups/pauses can only be noticed in the first 10 or seconds of playing or watching a live show. During that time they are noticeable on screens that have rolling horizontal or vertical text and they seem to occur once a sec approx. After the system settles down though (after the loading has completed) they are gone. To recap. I am running in non-service mode with java 1.5 and without the registry mod. Although boosting the priority does eliminate it. It is also more apparent with STVs that use more memory like the SageMC. With the standard STV and Cayars STV no such issues. |

Just some $.02 from a newb.
I have been seeing this problem since the 2.1 betas. So it is not just related to 2.2.4. Also, it appears that the problem is in the "playback". If I watch live tv or a recorded show, thru Sage, I see the 2-3 stuttering problem. In fact when I went to 2.2.4, I also saw, ghosting. Interestingly, if I use my MediaMVP to stream a previously recorded program, the playback is flawless. So the assumption is that there is nothing wrong with the recording of the shows by SageTV, but in the playing by Sage. HTH Kerry |
