Strange aspect ratio

Most of my recordings have an aspect ratio of 4:3, but a few of them have shown up with an aspect ratio of 2:1. While these videos play fine in Sage, a problem arises when playing them in Windows Media Player and when trying to use tools such as VideoReDo to edit out the commercials or AutoGK to encode them. When playing the 2:1 files in media player, they take on the 2:1 aspect ratio so everything looks stretched. VideoReDo crashes when I navigate through the video to find the commercials. The output from AutoGK is very jumpy and contains lots of blocky artifacts, while it is excellent on the 4:3 recordings.

Has anyone else ever seen Sage create recordings with a 2:1 aspect ratio? Does anyone know how I might “fix” these recordings?

My setup is as follows:
- Hauppauge PVR 250
- USB-UIRT Controlling a DirecTV STB
- ATI 9600

the PVR 250/150/350/500 only record at a few resolutions and this is based on the quality used during the capture
most capture qualities like DVD standard or Best use 720x480, SVCD use 480x480 and then VCD and MPEG1 captures use like 320x240 or something

Just some added information. All of my recordings are done at Best and are 720x480.

my point in posting that info is that 720x480 is not 2:1, it is 3:2 and the standard resolution for NTSC

I realize that 720x480 works out to 3:2. I am just saying that the display aspect ratio stored in the mpeg header of most of my recordings is 4:3, while a few are 2:1.

Not too sure about why the aspect ratio is wrong, but there is a freeware app that will let you change the aspect ratio called MPEGed .

At least you can try and manually change the header info to the correct aspect ratio...
