Linux SageTV Version Doomed already?
I'm pretty sure I read that the linux version of SageTV uses mplayer and according the the mplayer website, they are being shut down for patent violations.
http://www1.mplayerhq.hu From the MPlayer website: This site has been shut down because of numerous patent violations in MPlayer. The other free software multimedia players are next. This can't be a good sign, I can't see the Linux version lasting long if it does use mplayer. |

I hadn't heard Sage used anything in Mplayer.
My guess (complete guess though) is that it uses the MainConcept decoders, since those were recently added to Sage on the Windows side. |

The answer is no
What you read on the mplayer website has NOTHING to do with MPlayer, linux, open source, etc. directly.
The mplayer development team is a small part of a large group of people fighting the introduction of a US like patent system in Europe so that they don't get into the mess there that the US is in here with Patents. They don't want big companies like Microsoft to be able to register thousands of patents to prevent them from being able to be creative outside the US. http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&q=...e+Search&meta= Last edited by ecoolman; 03-14-2005 at 06:19 PM.
