3.0 a few weeks away? (unofficial announcent discussion)

Now that's exciting! But I can't tell if 3.0 is due in beta a few weeks from now, or info about 3.0 going to beta a few weeks from now.

Either way, I'm excited to see what new things Frey has been upto during the info blackout.

Man I'm just happy to hear that we're closing in on version 3. Since this is the unofficial discussion, I'm just gonna throw out a guess that this is pertaining to the early adopters program.

Oh, for sure it is. IIRC 2.0 was beta/subscriber-only for about 4 months. But it was a fun process none the less.

korben,

Are you wondering 'early adopters' as in Linux, or the Windows ver3.0 for early adopters?

I think crashless was implying the 3.0 for Windows being available to paid subscribers (ie, a "trial" version would stay version 2.x) like the original 2.x betas were.

I'm very glad to see this news (or anything, for that matter) from Dan! Let's just hope for the flexability we all want and deserve.

They are targeting a spring release for Sage 3.0 for Windows version as was stated in a previous post by Dan. The Linux based Sage MC has already been in testing, and that anouncement was made back in 1/6/05. I think it's fair to assume that they are referring to the 3.0 release for the Windows platform. Without reading to much into the annoucement, it appears that they are on track.

I have just recently finished all the major components for my Sage HTPC system. I've been procrastinating mainly because I have been lazy, and I have had to look for a new job which I start tomorrow. The other subliminal reason is that I was also waiting for the 3.0 beta.

2.0 was a whole order of magnatude better the the 1.x version of Sage. I'm curious to see what Sage 3.0 is going to offer.

Are clients backwards compatible with server versions? I.e. can I get a 3.0 Linux client and run the 3.0 client off my 2.2.7 sage server?

If they release a linux version for mac OSX which is backwards compatible with my ver 2 server, I would love it!

Probably not since the whole idea is to introduce newer functionality into the software. You probably would not be able to access the new 3.0 features/functionality with a 2.x client. Trying to be backwards compatable makes it a lot harder. I think currently you are advised to run the same client version with the same server version.

I wouldn't hold out much hope for a linux version running on OSX. They have never announce supporting another platform other then Windows and Linux.

Normally, the server & client versions must match. But, I'm not too sure why you would need a client to work with a different version of the server: in the past, upgrades have been free for current owners & it has already been stated that v3 will be a free upgrade if you already own SageTV.

I hope 3.0 will come with Studio! I know lots of people will be jumping off the sagetv bandwagon if it isn't...

with the recent Cayars issues, I would just like to create my own stv for my own personal use... not to make money (because then you have to provide some sort of support for everyone at that point)

so will this be a public beta for all current customers or only for a select few to try out 3.0?

I would guess to start, it would be a private beta for select few, but then go into a more general beta available to everybody after it's a bit more polished (assuming that it's not already in the hands of those select few).

Just a word of caution on these threads. Don't get too excited conjecturing about all the stuff that "could" be in 3.0. It has always led to dissappointment.

I try to expect little, then I'm always pleasantly surprised

Good point, though I think the note about Studio is a good one. IF they don't include it, many folks will likely jump ship.

I'd be surprised if there was a mass exodus because Studio wasn't included. Sure there might be a couple, but remember: Frey never said it would be included. So for people to go huffing away because it isn't, would be kind of childish.

It seems that those that are truely interested in contributing to the community, have been given Studio. So I would say (disclaimer:I'm not a frey employee) that it takes more than 50 posts, and whining to earn the trust of Frey (or anyone for that matter).

That said, there are a number of things we CAN expect with 3.0, like native MVP support, and a built-in web server. Those are things that we've been told are planned to be in by 3.0's release.

There will be a lot of B#*%&$( and moaning though There are a few that seem to hinge their use of Sage on recieving studio, but I think the vast majority are using Sage on for it's released merits.

FWIW, I'm guessing Dan was talking semi-public beta (like normal) since he posted it for all the world to see.

"semi-public" beta. hmm, what is that. I wasn't around when 2.0 came out so any clarification? Will people like myself be able to get onboard this beta? Obviously this is just speculation anyway.

You were around for the v2.1 and/or v2.2 betas, right? Usually, the 'public' beta is open to those who already own SageTV and are familiar with it. Since there are often problems in betas, new users who want to see how it works use the previous version as the trial installation. I have no idea whether that will continue to be the policy. We'll have to wait and see.

I don't know if I'd agree with that. Admittedly, I am rather new here, but I am "truely interested in contributing". I have a great idea (IMHO) for an interface I'd like to see (would be WAF and offer the nice "techie" stuff I want).

My wife likes simplicity, but I want the option to access more (without cluttering up what she has to look at). I like what Cayars has to offer (although there's a bunch in there I don't need/want), and the wife likes what we had on our Dish PVR 721 (which is what I was going to use as inspiration).

I also have Meedio and they seem to provide much easier to get access so you can design your own stuff. I'm looking into that as well.

However, given the somewhat flakey-ness of the Meedio TV product (beta, so flakey is somewhat expected), and the stability of Sage, I wanted to develop my custom stuff using Studio. And, of course, I would share this work with everyone in the Sage community. I'm sure others would be interested in the interface I'd be working on.

That being said, all I got when I emailed Frey about Studio is that they don't know what will be done with it. Not a "coming soon", "never being released", "here's a link", just they don't know what is to come of Studio.

Very frustrating, and making me think that perhaps Meedio is going to be the only way for me to be able to design the interface I want.

ahh, so i was around for those betas. Wasn't sure if there were any differences in beta policies between point releases and major releases--which i hopefully can safely assume 3.0 is a major release. Can't wait though (one i don't see used too often).
