sage.properties file filled with junk
I opened up my sage.properties file today, and found it had a ton of junk at the beginning of the file. It looked like an enless repetition of "\u0000\u0000\u0000". I cut it out and the file dropped from about 1.3 MB to 27 KB.
Everything seems to be OK, but (to steal a quote) "I have a bad feeling about this." Anyone else seen this before? Thanks. |

I've seen this before, and did the same thing as you with no consequences.
I remember a post once upon a time regarding this... I'll look it up. Edit: None of the threads I found had 'official' responses. But everyone seems to be in agreement that deleting it doesn't do anything 'bad'. I would still back it up before just in case. Last edited by Crashless; 05-27-2005 at 04:08 PM. |

amazing.... how creative some users are....
When I buy software I should not bother about these kind of things, but why is it that we all have to hack and tweak SageTV before it runs like it should be? I really would like to see a SageTV installation that prevents me from doing the tweaking, etc. afterwards! (maybe the 3.0 release? ) just my 2 cents....

I've unfortunately come across this on several occasions. In my case, it usually means that Sage has lost its settings and must be restored from the backed up copy.

I had this a couple of times. (As well as corrupt wiz.bin files)
1. When we were having power cuts. I cured this by buying a cheap UPS. 2. When I had a faulty IDE cable. I also had many OS lockups as well of course.

This has just happened to me. I had a week old properties file but I never backed up my wiz.bin so Im in the process of setting nearly everything up again
Can anyone recommend a program that will backup the properties and wiz.bin files and keep different versions of them - say up to 2 weeks worth? Cheers |

I've been using Cobian Backup for this. I currently use it for my comskip and SageTV folders (in their entirety) on the server, since it can do incremental or differential backups. I'm a bit an@l (for those of you still at work) about these backups, so I keep one from each month for the previous 6 months, one from each week for the previous 8 weeks, and the past 14 days worth.
If you've got the space, you really can't have too many backups.

Cheers, Cobain seems the way forward. The crash has been much worse as I originally thought and I have just spent literally all day (apart from eating my tea) getting it up and running again I still have a few small bits to sort out yet After my back ups I WILL NOT be spending another day doing this again
