Getting a DVD player working...

New sage user....I am trying to get a DVD player working...a bit confused....I have WinDVD 5.1 and Power DVD 6 if I need to use them (or their software) in some way. The player is an older 16x Toshiba region 1 player (not a burner). The problem I am having is that with some discs (Tomb Raider as an example), I get a forced 4x3 version through Sage, that cuts off the right hand side of the screen. If I change Sage detailed setup DVD decoder settings to Power DVD codec, I get the proper 16x9 width, but poor performance. If I use any other codec (filter) then the performance is better, but then I am back to 4x3 again, even though I have selected "Source" as the video aspect ratio setting.
Question....considering my available software choices...(the video card is a FX5200), what settings should I be using so that when I put a widescreen DVD in the player, I actually get a no-hassle widescreen playback through Sage with no futzing around...
Thanks...this board has been a lifesaver to a newbie

forgot to mention that discs that appear to be possibly 2.25:1 are the biggest headaches
