Recording Sizes & Quality

So... I set up this Sage TV program specifically to record my weekend football game & to record the normal day to day wife approved TV shows. I had intended burn the games to DVD discs, in order to bask in the glory that is the eagles as they finally march to Super Bowldom whenever I felt down on life.

I recorded the Games on MPeg2 Max... why?.... because I don't know what's best for recording football games. I thought it would be managable after removing the commericals.

15GB is not manageable.

So, anyone out there have some suggestions how I can best record my games in the highest detail possible, while still putting it all on a DVD (5GB) or a double sided DVD(10 GB)? I'll change anything that is neccessary. I just want to keep the games.

Thanks for your help
Klye

Record in a high Quality DVD format -> use DVD authoring tool to create an oversized DVD filestructure -> use DVDShrink to requantize the generated data -> real DVD size.

ok, where would I find a dvd authoring tool.

Assume I'm a complete novice. For that is what I am.

Search for "DVD author" in these forums for lots of suggestions -- it is a regularly occurring question

You might look into Mediachance's DVDLab or DVDLab Pro. I'm currently recording Redskins games (PPPPFFFFFT!) and turning them into DVDs. I was using DVD quality and then using DVD Shrink, but now I'm using a custom quality, which is basically MPeg2 Max with closed gops. The quality seems a little better when shrunk with DVD Shrink. Of course, I have a lot of hard drive space, so it's pretty easy for me to capture large files this way.

Just setup some dummy recordings (DVD Standard, DVD Best, etc) and see how big the files get and if the quality is OK for you. I use MPEG2 Max (5.6gig/hr) because I just record hour-long series shows and then convert them to DivX anyway. But for not coverting them, just experiment.

Everyone has different expectations when it comes to quality and what's acceptable and what's not.

I don't see "high quality dvd" as an option. I only see
standard dvd
long dvd
extra long dvd

In fact, I can't seem to find any information what is the difference between these settings.

Which one are you referring too?

In the newest beta version of SageTV (ver. 3.0.13 RC2), using the 'Good' (1.4 gb/hr) or 'Fair' recording settings (0.9 gb/hr) does the trick for a typical football game. Removing the commercials on the 'Good' setting is usually necessary in order to fit it on a standard DVD. I use a program called VideoREDO Plus to easily remove commercials (there are also other programs available). I record football games as well and even though the picture quality isn't bad, it isn't the best either (but still miles better than VHS). To get the best results image-wise you'd have to use one of the software programs mentioned elsewhere in this thread. However since I'm not super picky about image quality, I'm lazy, I'm a total newb, and I like things to be easy, this method has proven to be the best solution for me personally.

edit: I'll also add that the 'DVD extra long play' setting (1.6 gb/hr) also works but definitely needs to be edited for a typical football game.

Wink

You guys ARE getting the "expressed written concent of the NFL" before copingand watching these illegal copies...right?

Ever consider spanning over 2 disc as apposed to going thru all that work to redo it?

I have Studio123 DVD XCOPY PRO (before they made it illegal to buy) and I can compress a movie to one disc, wich works very well, or span 2 or more discs as required. Obviously the more discs, the less compression and artifacts due to motion.

To be honest, maybe its the program, I rarely use span multiple discs, because the picture quality is so close to the original using the programs comression.
