Baby sitter

Hi,

Just out of interest - how many of you actually explain how to use SageTV to the baby sitter? And how long does it take you to do so? Over here where TIVO does not ring a bell it's a bit difficult to say it works just like a TIVO.

That is if they are allowed to use your toy of course

The way I'd do it is to switch things over so that they are viewing straight from the cable/satellite box if you have one, or straight off the cable. Just take your PVR out of the loop all-together if you can. No confusion then (I would assume).

Be nice to have a login with rights - then you could have a password free guest login which can only record say 5 shows a day, can only delete shows that it has recorded (and only then if they aren't part of a scheduled series as well) and can't change already scheduled records/series.

They get the direct cable feed. No PVR.

Huh?!? The sitter should be watching the kiddo's, not TV ;P
But ya, I think user ID's and security levels would be the answer here, as with for the kids, friends, and family that would stay over or use Sage.

Would be nice to have a Client with Full account and a Guest account that will not override ANY server settings except to watch liveTV schedule UNconflicting recordings and imported stuff. (Absolutely no DELETION)
And if any conflicts occur, Server trumps the client's request and denies it...
Simply like a guest account. No Setup screen, color calibration, creating playlists, just like a dummy terminal.
I think that creating a permission per file or right might be too big an undertaking and further complicate Sage for the "average" end-user.

This goes back to my client lock-down thread. It seems to be a growing concern -- and rightfully so.
For the time being, I suppose a dumb TV is the best course. I too would like to see this functionality in the future.

I agree.. its like a valet key for your car. You can drive it around, but you cant get into the glove compartment or trunk.

Hi,

that is a bit strange - I had anticipated very different answers. I go along with Naylia - it should not be possible to break it. So if you trust them with your kids then surely you trust them with your gear (that cannot be broken).

I agree that recording/deleting can be a problem but apart from that - is it easy enough so someone that has never seen it can operate it? Are the instructions that you give them while you walk to the door sufficient?

In the beginning our baby sitter watched cable only but she's asking to record things so she has something to watch when the kids are sleeping.
