Question party like it's 2009......

So, I've got a question that's been keeping me from putting more $$ into my Sage PVR system: What use will it be in 2009 - when HDTV is all there is?

I love the Sage software, I love the concept. I don't watch live TV at all anymore. But what bothers me is that it looks like 3rd party PVR's will become useless in a few years. Currently, I'd love to purchase an HDTV, but without any local stations broadcasting in HDTV (other than PBS), what is the point? Without having the ability to use SageTV with encrypted HD programming, which sounds like what the future has in store for us, what's the point?

Again, I'm not knocking the SageTV product - I think it is the best one out there and have been using it since the betas of 2.0. But, what is everyone planning on doing once HDTV is really here?

By 2009 (and probably end of 2006), a cable card interface will be available for computers, allowing you to hook up your computer to your cable just like a cable box - giving you access to all the HDTV goodness that comes down the pipe.

Don't worry - HTPCs won't be leaving your living room any time soon.

2009 is pretty far away in electronic / computer terms. Whatever you buy today will be obsolete or near obsolete by then anyway, be it a PC running SageTV or a Tivo or a ReplayTV.

Don't tell my ReplayTV 2020 that I bought in November of 1999 that.
I still use that for conflict resolution!

Yeah, it's not like you can't record HD content now as it is... I'm not too worried about it just yet. When 2007 rolls around we'll see what I need to buy then.
