Playing CDs

Is there a method to allow for the playback of a physical CD? I looking through the docs, I see the ability to rip from CD, Burn CD, but not play.

The API docs also state "NOTE: Currently this is only supported on the Linux operating system" for those CD calls; it is not possible for the core to do this on Windows currently. (And no, I don't know when/if it will.)

maybe some of our stv gurus can figure out how we can listen to our redbook audio (those darn audio CDs) in the Sage UI ... ripping can be an objective

Try using a MediaPlayer plugin. There's information on that in the Configuration section of Support on our site.

Or with the Studio you can bypass the whole MediaPlayer plugin if you want and do it any way you want and link it up with Java. (Yeah, my first post saying 'use the studio')

I still don't get why so many people want to listen to physical CDs anymore. Doesn't everyone rip to MP3's these days?

I'm honestly asking for a reason, not chastising your feature request.

Every once in a while, somebody want's to throw in a CD their friend brought over. In addition to that, on the ripping side of things. A plugin which does the encoding from a CD would eliminate the need to do it on another machine and transfer it to sage.
Version 1 should be just the player.
Version 2 shoulc be player/ripper

you're right in part. I am sure many people don't listen to CD's anymore (I for one do not), but the option is nice to have I guess if someone comes over with a book of CD's...or if your wife just bought a CD and wants to listen to it (I wouldn't expect my wife to know how to rip a CD so she would want the option to just listen to it until I have the time to rip it).

I think that the ripping/burning of CD's is more important though (a little OT though)

Aren't there some CLI rippers? Seems like it wouldn't be too hard to set this up. If someone finds one, I'll do the Studio stuff.

Wow, that's a nice offer. I have just done a quick search and came up empty but will keep trying. Hopefully others will chime in on this (maybe in another thread)

and sorry again for the OT posts

Here's one from a cursory look on the internet.

Easy - when I rip a CD, it's not just a matter of tossing it into the drive and hitting a button. First, I rip using Exact Audio Copy. Then I make sure it is correctly tagged using Tag & Rename. Finally, I run it through MP3Gain. Once I'm sure it's of a quality to add to my collection, I copy it over to my media drive.

Meanwhile, the GF just wants to listen to the new CD, or a friend brought one over, etc.

What about a pure java CD Player?

Could it be used? If so (i am not a java person.) here is a link to one.

Could this be used in the background and called? or something?

it can be except that person would have to provide the jar files which i don't think he's done. otherwise, it has to be command line. right?
