Is processing my files just as easy as xml files?

I was just wondering if it would be possible to create .my files with new recordings? I have seen some STV's create xml files with the show info.

I record, edit(VideoReDo) comms, encode to Xvid or H.264, then finally put into a library folder.

If Cayar's is ported to V4 and able to create .my files, I could just move them with the enocded file...
Any chance somebody could (or would want) to take this job on? Or is there some other way to accomplish this with V4?

What program are you using that needs .my files? Using studio, the code to create them wouldn't be that much different than the code that creates XML files.

I just moved to V4 today. I was using 2.2.8 with Cayar's 17A.
I have my entire DVD(1200+) collection in Nero Digital AVC format. I have created .my files for many of them and now with V4, I lost the ability to utilize them. It would really STINK to lose all that work and even worse if I had to do it all over again using something else.
I would like to get them back but also be able to create them for new recordings.
I also installed Greggerm's stv to get external player support back (Thanx again Greg) and if I could get these 2 requests I would be in HTPC heaven....

I have just started to read the manual. I took a 6 month course in client/server programming but never really utilized it since (5 yrs ago). Maybe if nobody can do this I will make it a pet project.

"Yah, my wife will let that happen!"

I think I'm missing something - you made 1200+ .my files by HAND? Or are you using DVD Profiler or something like that with DVDPro2MY? If you're collection is already in DVD Profiler, there are WAY easier ways to get that info in SageTV - my STV uses Stanger's Data Importer, which reads the Collection.xml that DVD Pro exports and binds those to the imports in SageTV.

From what I can tell, it wouldn't be hard for me to put in external player support to my STV - I just haven't yet because no one has asked for it.

Does this help?

I started to read up on the DVD profiler but was not sure it applied to me. My DVD's are encoded into *.MP4 files. From what I gathered, the DVD profiler was for ISO's or VIDEO_TS folders or something. I have named the *.mp4 files with the movie name.
Ex: Batman Begins.mp4, but if they start with "The" or "A" I put it at the end.
Ex: Time to Kill A.mp4

Can the DVD profiler work for me?

And yes, I employed my son to cut and paste the .my files by hand.....

But I would also like the ability to keep info from new recordings and easily port them with my encoded & edited import video file if possible.

Maniac - I was secretly planning on figuring out how Cayars made his STV read the .my files ... no promises, but "I'd like to have that working at my house too."

Oh my gosh. I can't believe you took the time to do that...

Yeah, DVD Profiler can work for ANY type of movie file. As long as it's titled the same thing as the DVD Profiler entry, it will be connected to the information. This is a WAY more efficient way to keep track of a DVD collection, and it automatically will keep entries updated, and gives you cover art to boot.

My video library has a mix of DIVX files and VIDEO_TS folders, both connect to the information in the DVD Profiler database without issue.

This also would have saved you from making .my files, as there's a plugin somewhere that converts the DVD Profiler XML to a bunch of .my files.

As for encoding recordings and keeping the metadata from the EPG, that's totally separate, though not as easy - there have been posts that detail how to do it.

Just to elaborate a bit, DVD Profiler really has nothing to do with any sort of files on your hard disk, what it is (and all it is) is a program/database of DVDs, you could think of it like CDDB in a way. You punch in your DVDs and it retrieves the info and coverart from a central database.

As to the question of if the DVD Profiler support in SageTV will work for you that's slightly different. What that does is looks up media file names in the DVD profiler exported XML file. It should work just fine with any files in SageTV since the DVD Profiler importing doesn't rely on extention only filename (or foldername in the case of true DVD rips). You simply need to make sure that your filenames match the names in DVD Profiler.

You should check out the info on manually moving files to the video library. Sage will retain metadata for files manually moved to the media library (import dirs) based on the show ID part of the filename.

But from what I read, you then access it through archive instead of imports.
The dvd profiler idea sounds interesting and I will check it out. But I am really looking to find a simple way for new recordings.
