Stuttering after 3.0.11 to 4.0 Upgrade
Good evening,
Has anyone else experienced a stuttering problem in playback of videos since upgrading to 4.0? I'm wondering if hardware requirements changed or something, but don't really believe so. Is 512MB enough still? My video card is an aging GeForce 4 440MX running in overlay with the Nvidia decoders. I haven't changed anything other than the upgrade to 4.0. As tests, I've tried lowering the recording quality to the .9 GB setting and it may have lowered the stuttering, but it still seems to occur. Stutters seem to occur once every minute or so. Any thoughts anyone? EDIT: I've tried enabling FSE and it just makes it crash.... and the pausing video still seems to occur. Audio no longer pauses.. seems ti still happen about once every minute or so. Running DirectX 9.0c ... Win XP SP1... I'm going to try to upgrade to SP2 to see if I'm any better off. Edit: Video seems to pause, as does sound, during the 1 second or so stutter... seems to do 1-3 stutters in a row about every minute. Stopping SageTV and monitoring the system shows >1%CPU usage, no paging, etc... no other apps running other than a timesync app that updates every hour. Not running SageTV as a service. .. and running out of ideas

I was having this problem yesterday too. Disabling the SageTV service and running in FSE seemed to fix the problem for me. However it was only a temporary fix. I left SageTV running all night, and came back this morning to see that my Live TV is stuttering every 3-5 seconds again. Memory leak?
I am runnning: SageTV 4.0 P4 2.5ghz 1GB RDRAM 6800GT 256mb forceware 81.87 (upgraded from 81.85 to fix tearing with VMR9) HDD is 3.0Gb/s SATA Windows XP Java 1.5 Nvidia decoders Default recording is DVD Extra Long Play If anyone has any tips please let us know! |

As to the machine running SP1 in the OP, it very well could possibly be affected by malware since it obviously lacks a great number of security patches. If so, upgrading to SP2 could be very problematic if the malware is not removed first. BTW, my stuttering is very minor and only noticable during football games. I'm having a similar stutter happening after going from the latest version of 2 to 4. Happens every couple of minutes. Audio is never affected but video stutters and either distorts and then jumps to sync with audio, or plays the video really fast to catch up to the audio. Very annoying.

Yep, had that problem too. I have seen quite a few issues with v4 than i ever had with v2.2. Don't even think i had any issues with v2.2. I really hope they come out with some updates soon.

I upgraded to XP SP2 the other day, and that specific stuttering, fast catch-up problem seems to have gone away. However, I now have the micro-stutter with the NVDVD codec, so I'm using the Intervideo one temporarily. I'll try upgrading to the New Nvidia coded and updating my video drivers and see if it helps at all......

I did some testing with the Nvidia Drivers and the PurVideo Decoders and discovered that I could not use a new NVidia Driver Version than 66.93 wihtout severe performance problems on my XFX FX 5200 card. I suspect the newer drivers perform / are not tested well with older video cards. Even 71.84 Had the performance issue...I have been using the 61.77 Version forever without problem...I guess upgrading video drivers is not always the best idea with an older video card.

New problem with Stuttering...since 3.x and 4.0
Anyone have this happen to them? *some* of my recording will start to stutter, and as time goes buy, the stuttering gets worse.
It's the same type of thing that happens if you run too many processor intensive tasks on the computer. It only happens on some recordings, and others are fine. This has happened since going from 2.x to the 3.x betas on now onto 4.0 live. If I stop the recording, and start it up again the stuttering goes away for about 6 seconds, and then returns. It gets so slow that it seems the picture is almost stopped. The CPU utilization is only 10% when this is happening. It works fine when I play the MPEG with Windows Media Player Any ideas on the cause? Last edited by Steve2112; 11-09-2005 at 11:06 PM. |

Me too !
I am a newbie to all this but I have the same problem on Sage v4 and B** too (trialing both right now - both have same problem -stuttering)
I can use win2000 or gbpvr without any stutter but Sage and the other one aren't healthy. Equip is Dell Celeron 1.6 512M with 80Gig spare drive for video. Hauppage PVR150 GeForce fx 5200 I have tried all the stuff mentioned above but nothing helps ? I will keep watching and hoping ! Neil |

Same here
I was using the 3 beta and it was fine. Then I moved to 4.0 and it began stuttering . I tried with VMR9, VMR9 w/FSE, and Overlay. Tried Sage and Intervideo codecs with no luck. Tried adjusting the audio codecs with no luck. I can watch tv but the stuttering gets really annoying

OK ... I have been so busy installing, configuring and customizing that even though stuff is recording via Favorites and Manual records after reading this I thought I'd better check out playback ... I am getting this too ....
Got a 3GHz P4 w/1GB RAM and an ATI AIW x800 XT. Can't imagine it's a hardware thing ... Got both tearing and stuttering happening ... tried both video codec’s, with FSE and without ... and still the same ... With this many people having the same problem is it a bug introduced from Beta 3 to Release 4 ?? OR ... Any help on a solution? Thanks, T. |

Anyway, the point is version 4 came out about the same time (roughly) as the October 20 NVidia driver, and users that changed both could be affected by either. |

A little update for my problem in hopes that others will benefit.
The stuttering that I'm describing looks to be happening while encoding not decoding. I noticed last night that my two 250 cards were sharing an IRQ with the video card and modem. I have since moved them and will update the group with the findings. |

Check all updates
I was having this problem too.
here's what I did. When I first install STV, I think it was 2.2 after getting 4.0 things were less noticable. I also installed on a box that was sitting around for a while. What I did was reinstalled everything: -Windows XP Pro. -installed all windows updates until dead do us part! -installed mobo built in hardware drivers. usb, 6.1 audo drives, sata raid drives, etc. -installed video drives -installed my usb PVR softy. -installed SageTV v4.0 it was still kinda noticable and I messed with all the settings. I realized that I didn't install the Via 4in1 drives. That was the key. this system was made up of some really unmatched hardware too. mobo: abit VT7 - ok board has built in 6.1 with optical out --p4 non HT 2.8ghz @800Mhz with 1Gb RAM non DC @ 266mhz video: ATI 9700 pro - will replace Tuner: pinnacle PCTV USB2.0 - waste of time with this thing... bought WinTV 500 2 tuner card, but it still works great for recording. with everything updated it runns really smooth now. Hope this helps. maybe too much info. I'd advise to update all mobo stuff. Last edited by x321y123; 11-25-2005 at 01:25 AM. |

regarding my previous post, I have tested this on 3 other systems, various abit mobo's and had no problems.

Well, I tried updating the ATI drivers only, after several problems with updating Catalyst, uninstalling, installing, system restore and finally went back to the original ATI CD and Display Driver only (Download Update). Bottom line ... The same problem occurs.
I then downloaded a 30 day trial of the Bronze NVIDIA Decoders ... Installed and selected them in the Sage Video Settings ... Yep, same problem ... So, I still haven’t conquered it ... I have an ECS MoBo and have installed all the HW drivers provided. The Device Manager seems to be happy with no yellow ! ... I am still stumped and looking for suggestions ... Won't do me any good to have a great new Sage 4 interface, Studio customization and new cool / quiet HW when the fundamental PVR recordings tear and stutter all day long. Thanks, T. |
