Why is Intelligent Recording so dumb?

Or stated another way, does someone at frey secretly want to record Fox News *always*!

I have deleted hundreds of recordings of News at 5 News at 4, Today, Early News, NBC News, Tyra Banks, THe View.... argh!!!!!!!!!!!!

Each time I delete the recording I choose delete because I don't like it. I thought this was supposed to aid the intelligent recorder.

Note I have never watched *any* of these programs through the software.

I like to use IR because it will get the odd movie I missed and would like to watch. Plus is adds content that I get to watch that I would normally miss.

But all the bs recordings take away from stuff that I would like to see recorded.

Thoughts?

Did you delete these recordings in v2 or v4? There was a bug fix for v4 that fixed an issue about deleting shows marked Don't Like. View the historical airings for some of those shows to see what is marked Don't Like; while there, you can use the Don't Like command on the Future Airings group to mark a bunch as Don't Like all at once.

Plus... don't watch live tv with "intelligent" recording on... It'll just start adding anything you watched live to it's "he likes it... he really likes it." database.

I watch a lot of "Live TV". Is there any way to tell Sage to ignore any shows watched as Live TV when deciding what shows to IR? If not, maybe this could be added in a future version?

Yeah, some way to exclude live tv would be a nice option. During the hurricane none of the normal tv shows were on, it was just news coverage of the events and I'd have it on for the updates and tracking as the hurricane was approaching. Took me forever to go back in there and clear out all the history from watching that.

Also, wonder how hard it would be for them to expand the IR rating system. Seems that it's limited by it's like/don't like options and that don't like doesn't always keep it from being recording. Maybe a 5 point system would increase the functionality.

1 - Love it, record it, pretty much becomes a favorite
2 - Like it, record it if a tuner is available but 1 and favorites come first
3 - It's ok, if nothing else is on go ahead an record it, but delete it first if space is needed.
4 - The equivilant of today's don't like. Just add's a negative vote to the program
5 - Hate It, Never record it, prevents the show from ever being recorded again unless manually recorded or watched live. But if manually recorded or watched live it won't automatically start recording again.

I think a Hate option or never record again option would likely help with the IR situation.

Thanks! These recordings did not even start to show up until after the v4 upgrade. Even though I mark them dont like it still records the show . Is there a way to delete IR scheduled recordings?

Edit:

OMG 1150 scheduled future airings???? There has got to be an easy way to set dont like on a group than by marching through each item one at a time.

Yes, mark them as Don't Like...

Do what I said in a post above... view the historical airings, then highlight the Future Airings group & use the Don't Like command. Such group commands are mentioned on p. 36 of the v4 PDF manual in your SageTV directory.

Edit: The aggressive negative profiling option mentioned in the next post is in Detailed Setup -> Customize. Someone forgot to list it in the manual, though.

Aggressive negative profiling really helps prevent Sage from making dumb IR decisions.

Thanks. The command you speak of is not available via the mouse interface. (left click opens the group, right click gives menu display options) Once I figured out what the keyboard shortcut this worked.

I am also using the negative profiling option, but it did not seem to help much.

you can also do this sort of thing via my webserver:

do an EPG Search for all past airings on Fox with don't like not set; then select all; then set don't like...
Or search for all 'watched' past airings on Fox, select all, clear watched -- you may see why it thinks you like it!

Outstanding work! Is there a published API for the WIZ.bin data? Or said another way, how do you perform the searches?

EDIT: What are all of the "No Data" items that show up? Are they "logically" deleted records or a problem indicator for my wiz.bin file?

See the studio forum stickies/studio manual for info on the sage API... Webserver code is public (link from the wiki to Sourceforge CVS) if you want to see how it works..

No Data items are 'placeholder' programs created by Sage for gaps in the downloaded schedule, or for channels which have no EPG data.
