I'm not entirely sure how to tell Windows to run a specific program when a DVD is inserted, but there is supposed to be a parameter for this -- see p. 231 in the v4.1 manual for the -dvd parameter. I haven't played with that & it may expect SageTV to already be running.

what that does is allow you to sent a command to a running copy of sage TV.

I can place a call to sagetv.exe -dvd in the registry and make windows send a message to sage to start the DVD player.

Now I just need to find the right spot in the regestry.

For me the -dvd command line parameter does not work... I use -event 74 (which is the DVD SageCommand)

For Windows 2K and XP:
  • Open My Computer
  • Tools -> Options
  • File Types tab
  • Select File Type 'DVD Video'
  • Click Advanced
  • Click New
  • Action: "Play with &SageTV"
  • Click browse and select sagetv.exe
  • In the application box, put -event 74 after the quoted path to SageTV
    Code:
    "C:\Program Files\SageTV\SageTV\SageTV.exe" -event 74
  • Ok.
  • Set Default
  • OK
  • Close
This sets Sage as the default DVD disk handler...

For Windows XP only, you need to get rid of the annoying 'what do you want to do with this disk' popup..
  • Right-click the DVD drive in My Computer
  • Select Properties
  • Select AutoPlay tab
  • Select DVD Video in drop-down
  • Select 'Select an action to perform'
  • Select 'Play DVD movie with SageTV' in list below
  • OK
Now, either put a DVD in the drive, or if a DVD is already in the drive, right-click the drive and select AutoPlay

(one for the FAQ?!)

I'll try the 1st part.

I know the 2nd part will not work in windows 2000. THe properties sheet for DVD/CD's does not have an autoplay tab in 2000.

Thanks, I updated my instructions...
For Win2K once you have set Sage as the default DVD handler, it should work...

Nielm,

for me, this only works if Sage is already running and not sleeping.

If it is just sleeping, the DVD does begin to play and I hear the audio but sage stays sleeping in the tray. If I then restore Sage, the DVD is playing in the preview window on the main menu.

If Sage is fully closed, nothing at all happens.

Maybe this is normal but I don't know for sure. How does it work for you?

This would still require that SageTV already be running, but you could look into the SendMessage utility that comes w/SageTV & is explained in Appendix J of the SageTV manual. You could use it to send multiple messages that first wake SageTV & then starts DVD playback. If needed, it has the ability to delay between each message, so you could give SageTV a chance to finish waking up before starting the DVD.

I always leave Sage running, and never sleep it

If you have Girder, you could build a complex group that:

starts sage if it is not started
wakes sage if it is sleeping
waits for Sage window
sends DVD command

(there is some Girder GML somewhere that does the start/wakeup complex command)

and then instead send an Girder event in DVD autoplay rather than a Sage event...

Ack. I don't have Win2K, so the following is guesswork -- use at your own risk!

It may be that your DVD player has renamed the file type (on my work PC, it the file type has extension 'NONE' and is called "InterVideo WinDVD4")

If you feel confortable with Regedit, maybe you can look at the key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\DVD
the '(Default)' value is the displayed name of the file type -- you can check what it should be called...
