Question Which Recording Quality Setting Do You Use?

I am curious about which Recording Formats folks are using ...

Also, maybe post which Recording Qualities below you use as well??

  • Best (Format: DVD @ 3.0 GB/hr)
  • DVD Long Play (Format: DVD @ 2.4 GB/hr)
  • Great (Format: DVD @ 2.0 GB/hr)
  • DVD Extra Long Play (Format: DVD @ 1.6 GB/hr)
  • Good (Format: DVD @ 1.4 GB/hr)
  • Fair (Format: DVD @ 0.9 GB/hr)

MPEG-2
  • SVCD Standard Play (Format: MPEG-2 @ 1.1 GB/hr)
  • SVCD Long Play (Format: MPEG-2 @ 0.9 GB/hr)
  • SVCD Extra Long Play (Format: MPEG-2 @ 0.7 GB/hr)

MPEG-2 PS
  • MPEG2 Max Quality (Format: MPEG-2 PS @ 5.9 GB/hr)
  • CVD (Format: MPEG-2 PS @ 1.3 GB/hr)

MPEG-4
  • MPEG-4 High Quality (Format: MPEG-4 @ 2.0 GB/hr)
  • MPEG-4 Good Quality (Format: MPEG-4 @ 1.5 GB/hr)
  • MPEG-4 Standard Play (Format: MPEG-4 @ 1.1 GB/hr)
  • MPEG-4 Long Play (Format: MPEG-4 @ 0.8 GB/hr)

Everything you watch in Sage is recorded. So yes it affects "liveTV".

I use DVD Standard Play (Format: DVD @ 3.2 GB/hr), anything below that and I can see a drop off in quality.

I primarily use DVD Standard Play (3.2G/hr).
I'll use DVD Long/Extra Long on shows that I don't care about the quality so much (John Stewart Show,Colbert Report).
I use the MPEG Max Quality (5.9G/hr) on all my VCR recordings to try to retrieve all the data I can from the VCR source.

I use DVD Extra Long Play as the default - for most content I can't see a difference between Sage recordings and regular cable (using a 50-inch HDTV-ready TV).

For content with a lot of movement like sports I need to use a minimum of DVD Long Play to get good results, otherwise things seem blurry. This is particularly noticeable in football during kickoffs, when the camera is panning across the field to track the ball and you see the crowd moving in the background and the players running down the field.

Unfortunately playback is an issue with DVD Long Play or better using my ancient Pentium III - 550MHz. Playback will stutter every few minutes (or more often) especially if Sage is recording something at the same time.

When setting up a recording or adjusting your settings of your "Favorites", you'll see a recording quality selector. If I remember correctly, it maybe the very last choice of the selector. I'm using SageTV 4.x and didn't have to enable anything to get that quality setting. Though, I can't remember if it was part of the earlier versions (SageTV 2.x).

First tuner is set to DVD Standard Play (Format: DVD @ 3.2 GB/hr), the second tuner is set to Great (Format: DVD @ 2.0 GB/hr), depending on what I want recorded.

The poll would seem to be which format do you use (DVD, MPEG, MPEG-PS, DivX are formats not qualities )

Best here

OK ... you got a point ...

I really started out wanting to know "qualities", but polling only allows up to 10 choices ...

So I went for polling the format and asked people to post qualities and didn't update my text ... It looks like everyone got the gest of it anyway ...

I did update the text in post one though ... Thanks!

T.

You can also set the Default Quality and Per Tuner Card in SageTV v.4.0 by going in to ...

Detailed Seup > Multimedia > Recording Quality > Set Quality
