Recommendation for HD audio setup

I am experimenting with HD recordings and need some advise. I have downloaded a few sample HD clips from a couple of the card manufacturers. I can get them all to pass audio thru SPDIF to my rec. Sounds great. What I would like to be able to do is to also pass Stereo output out the sound card to my TV simultaneously. That way I do not have to have the rec on unless I want it. Now 1 of the files I have works EXACTLY this way. It outputs to my TV and thru SPDIF and plays thru both. However the others that I have only do SPDIF. I cannot get any sound thru the stereo output on the soundcard, just SPDIF. I have experimented with nVidia Platinum, AC3 Filter, and CyberLink but can't get it to work properly.

Now I understand that the one that does work is possibly only recorded in stereo but can I get the others to play out the stereo output and not SPDIF just to see if its possible? I thought AC3Filter would down sample (?) the audio to stereo only. Am I mistaken in that assumption?

ANY suggestions......
