I can't say I know how to change the boot screen, but you may want to try poking around the MVP a little bit to see what you can find.

telnet <IP of the MVP>

login as root, no password needed. There is a directory called sagetv that has a few interesting executables in it. You may also have some fun poking around the init scripts in the /etc directory and the hardware/software info in the /proc directory.

Have fun.

I don't think they are trying to protect anything, the MVP needs that .bin to boot from so it's gotta be a format Hauppauge wanted in the first place.

Unfortuantely a hard reboot kills everything you just did.

I don't see this as an IP isssue either.

The problem is that the boot file is binary. So, you compile it. Without the raw sage MVP bits, we wont be doing that. We could cook up our own MVP bits as several others (including Sage) have done, but that kinda defeats the purpose of what we are doing with it.

As for the root and no password thing, it's not a big deal unless you expose it to the internet, and even at that, it's so stripped down, not much could be done with it. Doesn't worry me much. If it's worrysome to someone, you can put it on a dead net with the sage server fairly easily. Even if their was a password, it would be all over the internet since the OS is read only anyhow.
