Question HDD going bad?--How to verify

Hello,

I recently had a problem with some recordings being deleted by sage which it turns out could be related to a problem with my HDD.

Here is the response I got from Narflex:

Quote:
I don't think it's a bug in SageTV. Something's probably wrong with your hard disk. I looked through your logs, and basically, at one point the filesystem decided to report that E-Ring and Lost were both 0 bytes in size (which in fact they were not). That most likely means something is going bad in your hard drive. I'd highly suggest doing a scan on your G:\ drive to see if anything is wrong with it. Just wanted to give you a heads up on what I found.
My question is: What do I use to scan my HDD to see if it is going bad?

Any suggestions are welcome.

TIA

Jesse

Right click on your disc in My Computer -> Properties -> Tools -> Check Now.
Check both boxes and click start.

Speedfan can read the S.M.A.R.T. data from the disk, if you have it enabled in the BIOS.

Go to the hard drive manufacturer's web site -- they should diagnostic utilities you can download... and they will usually want you to run their own programs before trying to get a replacement, if the drive is bad.

Thanks folks,

On the way home I remembered the utilities that came with the seagate drive (as mentioned by opus) so I gave them a try. There were three levels of diagnostics. S.M.A.R.T scan, Quick Scan and Thorough Scan (or something along those lines). I ran all three and they came back with no troubles found.

I then took stanger's advice and ran the windows diagnostic. It took quite a while to run but ended with a simple message that it was done. No info regarding what it found. I am assuming no news is good news on this one.

I'm going to have to figure that my drive is ok.

Thanks again,

Jesse
