JUC,

It is an SPDIF connector but there is no AC-3 decoder in the unit so all you will get out of it is stereo audio. The PCBs look almost identical between the old units and the new units so I wouldn't expect any added functionality. The wireless support is done through a wireless CF (compact flash) card which is removed on the new wired units Hauppauge is sending out to fulfill orders of the wired units. There is also a wireless antenna stuck to the front of the wireless unit. Some OEM units will be using the CF connector inside the unit for a CF memory card so that they will be able to play content off the internal card rather than a PC (for standalone kiosks and such). I will drop an email to my contact at Hauppauge to see if he can send me some pics of the new unit's PCB.

spanky-thanks for the info--good stuff. But I'm a little confused. Is it just this particular stripped down version that does not have the AC-3 decoder in it or will all the new MVP's (wireless) ones also not have this decoder? I don't understand the reasoning behind this.
Thanks
JUC

From what I understand none of the new models will have an AC-3 decoder. I'm not sure what Hauppauge is thinking. The person who I get my info from says that "The Powers That Be" do not want to add much to the cost of the MVP. I think they believe that their niche is the $99 to $129 market. They had discussed a "MVP Pro" model based on a Sigma Designs box (which was actually tested) that had component output, DVI and AC-3, native VOB and DivX support. The problem was the price point which would have been $250 easily. I'm not sure Hauppauge believes that there is a market for the MVP at that price point. I'm not sure that I blame them either. The MVPs are now well under $100 and people still want more out of them then what they were designed to do, can you imagine what people would expect at $250? Something that would fetch the paper in the morning, have dinner ready when you got home and would draw you a hot bath in the evenings. Anyway, here are the pictures. They are blurry but they are what I was sent. The original MVP is on the left of each picture with the wireless unit on the right. I'll try to get clearer pictures out of my friend in the morning.

Now that is a drag. Looks like the new mvp is not going to work for me.

Thanks again for the info.

Jesse, you could just wait for the transcoding to be finished in Sage. Wouldn't that work for you?

You say it doesn't have a built-in decoder however i should be able to hook the SPDIF connection to another reciever that does correct? I should be able to pass the AC3 stream through the MVP into something else that will support it or am I off base?

now there's a thought!! Also, when and if sage gets transcoding done and supports DVD streaming--what type of processor power are we talking about on the server end?

Thanks for all the infor everyone

That's what I was thinking too. The SPDIF should pass-thru the AC-3. We don't need the MVP to decode it, we just need it to provide the AC-3 stream. Currently nothing on the MVP can provide that.

Quite right. It was late and I was tired. This would be exactly what is needed. .

Now that that is settled, when can we get them?

Didn't I read somewhere of a mod to the original MVP to add SPDIF? Does anyone have a link? I'm thinking that things are about to get exciting for us MVP owners!

Andy.

Just posted a new beta that supports the new version of the MVP.

Oh yeah, the new beta does VOB transcoding as well.

Then we can expect that possibly the wireless version will work with SageTV when released now that beta 4.1.11 is released and supports MVP with firmware v2.0 and higher?

Yes, we will be supporting the wireless MVP. (it's just not done yet, but we're working hard on it)

Hi,

So I understand: VOB transcoding and spdif pass through? So this means playback of ripped DVD's with DD5.1?

TIA

MVP Firmware update

Will Hauppauge be updating the bootloader and/or firmware on the original 1.0 units? Is there any benefit to the updated firmware or is it simply to accomodate the audio and wireless changes?
