Advice on (safely) upgrading to v4 beta

I've read the FAQ and the sticky on upgrading, so I know the basics of what to backup. But my installation appears unusual, so I thought I'd get some advice before jumping in.

My extremely complicated setup is this: headless server <-- home network --> MVP (using Matt's MVP plugin) --> Standard def TV. That's it.

I'm running whatever version of sage was out last July (v3?)

My only real question is really what files to backup. I have both "Frey Technologies" directory and a seperate "SageTV" folder. Both seem to be used.

This is what I have now:

Directory of C:\Program Files\Frey Technologies\SageTV

04/12/2006 01:45 PM <DIR> .
04/12/2006 01:45 PM <DIR> ..
08/20/2005 11:14 PM <DIR> ChannelLogos
04/12/2006 01:45 PM 4,790,452 Wiz.bak
04/13/2006 07:54 AM 4,221,727 Wiz.bin
08/20/2005 11:14 PM 0 Wiz.bin.SageTV V2.2.6 RC
3 File(s) 9,012,179 bytes

Directory of C:\Program Files\SageTV

08/20/2005 11:12 PM <DIR> .
08/20/2005 11:12 PM <DIR> ..
08/20/2005 11:04 PM <DIR> Common
04/13/2006 07:54 AM <DIR> MediaMVP SageTV
04/13/2006 07:54 AM <DIR> SageTV
0 File(s) 0 bytes

Directory of C:\Program Files\SageTV\SageTV

04/13/2006 07:54 AM <DIR> .
04/13/2006 07:54 AM <DIR> ..
05/25/2004 08:06 AM 417,792 ac3filter.ax
07/04/1999 11:26 AM 18,007 ac3filter_GPL.txt
05/20/2005 12:57 PM 77,824 AUDIO_PREVIEW.dll
05/24/2004 03:04 PM 45,056 averapi_182.dll
09/27/2004 04:02 PM 81,920 aviwriter.ax
08/20/2005 11:05 PM <DIR> ChannelLogos
08/10/2005 02:49 PM 65,536 DirecTVSerialControl.dll
09/27/2004 04:02 PM 716,800 DivX.dll

[...]

08/10/2005 02:48 PM 45,056 Win32ShellHook.dll
03/23/2005 10:45 AM 110,592 WinMsiWrapper.dll
07/19/2005 08:20 PM 4,610,433 Wiz.bak
07/20/2005 02:02 PM 4,113,584 Wiz.bin
55 File(s) 66,277,101 bytes

The steps that I plan to do are:
1) Backup C:\Program Files\Frey Technologies\SageTV\wiz.*
2) Install Sage v4 beta into C:\Program Files\SageTV
3) Copy the backup wiz.* on top of the ones in the sage folder

Alternatively, I could just uninstall sage as step 1a. That's probably the cleaner way to go, since some of the current MVP plugin files won't be needed anymore.

As I type this it seems more straight forward that I thought it was going to be, but when I last upgraded, the wiz.* files got all F'd up, and we had to watch all recorded shows as imports. The WAF still suffers to this day

thanks for any advice or words of encouragement.

Matt

It looks like you installed a new version at some point in a different directory. Perhaps the old version was uninstalled first, then the next version was installed into the new default directory instead of making sure to install it over its old location. Then, you used the old properties files in the new location, causing it to use the wiz.bin files from the old location. That is why your latest wiz.bin is sitting in a directory almost by itself, while the current SageTV install directory has a very old wiz.bin... and explains why your old recordings were forgotten: they weren't in the wrong wiz.bin that was/is being used.

After backing everything up, I would install the new version on top of your existing version w/o uninstalling the old one first (as described in the upgrade sticky you referenced).

Then, delete your current properties files & the autobackup versions. Copy your newest wiz.bin files to the install location. When you start SageTV, you will have to reconfigure everything, but all your data files will be based in the latest install directory instead of 2 different places. (You could also edit the sage.properties file to point to the correct wiz.bin in the install dir, but that depends on how comfortable you are editing that file.)

OK, thanks. Appears painless, so we'll see.

Hopefully the ability to have a more fully-featured MVP interface will increase the WAF to an all-time high!
