SageTV Crashes When Attempting to Play MP3
I have been using SageTV for a while and am really impressed by its stability. I had never attempted to play any of my mp3 files, though, until today.
SageTV is apparently reading the id3 tags properly because I can list my songs by genre, but when I try to play a song the app just dies -- no message or anything -- just *poof* and the window and tray icon both disappear. The playback never starts. I do have a fairly large collection (over 3000 songs) and most of the files are VBR, but SageTV crashes on both VBR and CBR files. Any ideas? |

You might want to try pointing it to another directory and copy a smaller amount of mp3 files into that directory to see if you still have the issue.

It's worth a try. I must clarify, however, that I do not have all of my mp3 files in a single folder. They are arranged in folders by artist and album. When I get home I will test a small subset and also see if there are any errors written to the log file.
Thanks for the suggestion. |

Sometimes you'll get a mp3 file with an improper id3 tag or just not encoded properly that could be the whole issue. It might be painstaking but you might want to start with 1 or 2 files that you're pretty confident is OK. I'm betting you'll find one or hopefully just a few more that is causing the issue. (Maybe you have an mp3pro encoded one or one that is just corrupt.)

Also, confirm that all the files are actually MP3s and that you don't have incompatible file types like WMA mixed in with the MP3s.

I'm pretty sure there aren't any WMA files in there, but there may be some images. Are they a potential problem? I think some program I have likes to automatically download "album art" files -- I'm not sure which one.
Thanks again. |

It is still crashing. I even tried using a folder with only two songs in it. I have attached a log file.
There are no files of any other type in the folder and these files play fine on my Rio 500, Rio Car player, Xbox Media Player, and other software such as Musicmatch, Winamp, and WMP. The ID3 tags are all in perfect condition. Are there any incompatibilities I should know about, such as ID3 v1 vs. ID3 v2, CBR vs VBR, etc? Thanks in advance. |

Never mind!!!!!!
I was so focused on figuring out why the mp3 files weren't working that I didn't check to see if anything else was broken. It turns out I couldn't play anything from the library at all. I did a "repair" install and now it works. I guess something I installed recently stepped on Sage. Anyway, I'm glad it works. Thanks for all of the advice. Best regards, Jason |
