Client vs Placeshifter

Can anyone tell me the difference between client and placeshifter? I purchased client to watch sageTV from the office and it does not work, what makes placeshifter different?

Thanks

The placeshifter is much better for use over the internet because the SageTV server will transcode a recording to a lower bitrate so that it can be streamed via your internet connection to your remote location.

The SagetV Client is more configurable in terms of playback decoder settings, but it is really intended just for local LAN usage, since it plays the media as-is, so you see the video as it was recorded -- usually a bit rate that is too high to stream over the internet.

If used on a LAN, the Placeshifter can play video w/o transcoding it first.

Well put...nothing else needs to be said. Placeshifter is the way to go. I tried it once and ended buying it. Now i can watch live/recorded shows over the internet at work or my brothers house. Next i will try this in Canada this weekend

Remote?

What about using a remote with the client, but not the placeshifter?

I was thinking about putting a TV in my garage so when i am detailing the cars i can atleast watch TV and take my time and do the job properly. Even trying to figure out how to run the cable wire was just too much of an issue. Anyway with placeshifter and a laptop, lets just say i always look forward to detailing the cars now
