I don't know if this would even help, but mine was doing the exact same thing and I have a nvidia card. I downgraded my java to 1.4, but the video still froze with the spinning icon. Truthfully I've only had mine running for 24 hours and no freezes. One thing I did change was a registry hack that was suggested for hauppage cards, changing a couple zeros to ones. I changed them back to zero, and have since had no problems.

Didn't see anything related to another memory leak being fixed, but the thing that is strange, is why would the release another 1.5 version, when 1.6 beta is out?

Probably because 1.6 is beta and 1.5 is not.

Edit: Actually that's wrong. They still support 1.4 as well and 12 is fairly new as well. Certainly newer that when I first heard about 1.6 anyway.

I tried 1.5 Update 8. Still no good. Within 5 minutes I was up to 165000 handles.

They have that is why the installer installs Java 1.4.2 and not the 1.5 they had for a few betas.

Java 1.4.2 works great.

But, I need 1.5 for Bohica's Home automation Plugin. Which I've come to really use a lot.

So I'm running the new 1.5.8 for the time being.... it takes like three restarts to get it to render live TV. And... it seems like it doesn't matter if I use Overlay or VMR9... it still crashes. Video freeze, audio continues, and then it's time to kill the process.

The only way to run without a crash is use the SageTV Mpeg decoder. I'm using the Hauppauge NonCSS, which seems to work the best on my system. I have the Nvidia, and Sonic Cinemaster, and they crash too. So I dunno.

This latest version of Java seems to work okay, but I'm gonna revert back to 1.5.2 which seemed to be less flakey than the newest release for me.

The multiple restarts needed, really have my WAF at minimun, and the guys don't wanna come over anymore to watch the "race" or NFL stuff. They're callin' my setup...."CRASH 'O VISION" ...eek.

So, I'll keep tinkerin'.

I hope Sun Systems get's it right.

The handle problem is supposed to be fixed in 1.5.0_09.

Have you tried 1.5.0_05? It doesn't have the handle leak and has been stable on my system.

Okay... I have like all the versions of Java installers on my compy now.

I'll give 1.5.05 a try.

I've been using Java 1.6 Beta2 successfully with SageTV.

It's definitely faster than 1.5 (i had the latest 1.5 too). The UI is much more reponsive and the video under VMR9 resizes from fullscreen to a window instantly, compared to 1.5 where there was visible lag.

I don't know whether it's related or not, but I had this same problem. Max I could run STV is about 2 days, so I scheduled a reboot for the wee hours of the morning. Inconvenient, but effective.

I just bought a new LCD TV so I switched from the PVR-350's video out to the RBG from my nVidia card. Guess what? The problem has disappeared. Up four days now and it's purring perfectly. The interface is more responsive and when I do see the "spinning circles of death" (as my wife calls them), they spin MUCH faster than before and quickly go away.

I did make a couple other small tweaks, but nothing that should have affected this. Just wondering if anyone else experiencing this problem is using the PVR video out, and have you tried not using it?

Some SageTV crashes start to make some sense to me! I couldn't figure out why my girlfriend kept complaining about SageTV getting slower and slower.
And at my very first install (without VMR) I had SageTV going for over a week without a hickup.

The bug is supposed to be solved in the latest Java 6 release that can be downloaded at http://download.java.net/jdk6/binaries
But you better have installed the JRE 6 beta 2 from an installer before replacing your jre1.6.0 directory with the latest snapshot.

With all my java software, I've seen a sensible speed improvement with java 6... Also that far all releases of JDK 6 are more stable than JDK 5 for me.

I can confirm that the increasing number of handles goes away with the latest jdk 6 binary snapshot (b96-rc1).

Do we really have to do the chmod command? This sure seems like a lot of work, why not just release a new full version for it, instead of this?

And I assume I would want this:

jre-6-rc-bin-b96-windows-i586-18_aug_2006.jar, 30.72 MB

And then what, just double-click to install the files?

Yeah, I'm not "gettin' it."

I've tried twice to no avail. The sun site has some "sketchy" directions for me.

Please elaborate on how to implement this jre patch.
