I've tried twice to no avail. The sun site has some "sketchy" directions for me.

Please elaborate on how to implement this jre patch.
Download jre 6 beta 2 installer from sun's website (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/ea.jsp). It will install the jre in C:\Program Files\java\jre1.6.0 I believe.
Download the latest jre binary snapshot (that's the jar file), double click on it and it should launch somekind of installer... Install the file anywhere, it will create a jre1.6.0 directory. Replace the jre1.6.0 in C:\program files\java by this new one. And voila, installed.

Erik.

Thanks for the explicit explanation. I've got it installed and it appears to be working much better.

Thanks much for the explanation.

I will do this tomorrow. I did try the JDK installer and it seemed to work okay.
The JDK has the JRE in it... so... I gave that a go... and it works fairly well.

But, I believe I will try your method.

I'm up for trying anything.

Anyone who has been running the latest for a week care to comment on stability? Sounds like the handles issue is fixed, and it is supposed to be faster, any crashes?

TIA

Been running since the 21st with no issues yet. No crashes, and menus and everything seem slightly faster than they used to be!

Is this it http://download.java.net/jdk6/binaries/ , and why wouldn't I just use the installer at the top of the list?

That's the development kit, which I assume comes with a full runtime version, but also the dev kit. Depends on what you want installed in your system. The dev kit is a larger installation.

Yeah, I downloaded that and then saw it was the fullkit. So no I didn't install it.

I just downloaded the beta package and man did it improve the GUI speed

http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/ea.jsp

I have been lurking in this thread since the beginning and until a few minutes ago I have been using 1.42.12 and I just lived with the sluggish gui until tonight. I used to wait for a 10-15 seconds for some pages to load, not anymore

thanks for the tips and suggestions guys.

I am still not getting this. I have updated with 1.6 Beta 2 just fine. But when I download the snapshot I get a .zip file that I then extract but there is nothing to click on to execute. There is no jre1.6.0. Does this have to be extracted using the command prompt? Because the instructions for this say to use the jre1.6.0 folder, but it does not exist. Any help?

The one thing I noticed its using the lastest beta java version, the UI for MVP is a lot faster and its been stable for the 24 hours with out a reboot until it locked. But what concerns me is amount of handles being reported by task manager !! over a million handles in just 24 hours, when saged locked up during a channel change is when I took a look.

Has anyone else seen this type of problem, I cant seemed to get a "handle" on this

It sounds like you are running VMR9 and don't habe the snapshot update applied.

I dig it.

Okay, I've done a complete 'format c:' and a reload of everything, including SP2. I have been running the newest Java 1.6.02 and latest snapshot file and have smooth video and a very quick GUI with Sage. No lock ups. No hiccups. I really think the reload was the best improvement for the entire system, but I like this latest snapshot. Time will tell, it's only been 24hrs, and the handles aren't over 690. This seems to be the best so far.

Thanks to the contributors.

Now to back up the entire drive with Norton Ghost.

Peace,

Wirenut
