Technique to avoid conflicts when manually recording?

At work today, a colleague asked me to record a show tonight because she won't be home. I pulled up my webserver, and had it scheduled as a manual recording in about 20 seconds.

However, what I didn't notice until later was that my tuners were already scheduled to record favorites tonight at the same time. This, of course, created a conflict. (And there were apparently no future airings of my favorites)

I looked at the additional airings for the show tonight, and see that it's also shown at 3am tomorrow morning. I cancel the original recording and reschedule for this new timeslot. No issues, and everything is resolved.

But my question is this: Why won't Sage look ahead and alter the recording schedule itself? I assume it's because I set this as a manual record vs favorite. Is there a way that I can tell Sage that if I want to record a show manually that I really just want that specific episode, and I don't care if it's actually at the specific time that I select?

Or do I just need to perform this step myself. Sage does this beautifully for favorites, I would think there might be some way that it'd help me out when manual recordings too.

Thanks
Matt

Manual Recordings are recorded when you tell them to be recorded, since when you tell SageTV to record a specific airing, it believes that you really did mean that you want _that_ show to be recorded.

You could add the show as a favorite to let SageTV choose which airing to record.

Or, using the default STV, you can choose the Record Options from the pop-up video options menu & it will contain a button for "Record one of X future airings" if there are additional airings. The Placeshifter would show the same thing.

I don't remember how the web server handles conflicts, but the Placeshifter UI will give you the conflict icon when the schedule is redone, so you can see if there is a problem right away.

There are tons of reasons why someone would want to record a show at a specific time. It happens each week with West Wing for me. It conflicts with the Simpsons, but I'd rather watch the new West Wing episodes a day earlier than be able to watch the Simpsons.

Perhaps Sage could add a "Record This Episode" feature that does what you're talking about. However, I don't think many people would use it so it would just clutter up the menus.

A good alternative might be for Sage to handle these events in the Recording Conflicts screen. On of the options for handling the conflict could be to look for feature airings, either manually or have Sage automatically do it.

Thanks for the comments. I wasn't suggesting that Sage should always look for additional airings of manual recordings, I just thought there might be a flag to allow it to do so.

As always, thanks for the quick replies.

I was manually recording a show the other day and also noticed a conflict with a favorite. I did see the "record one of X future airings" selection as well. But when I tried it, it still wanted ME to pick which one to record.

Is there a way to tell Sage to pick the most optimum (least conflicting) one of the list? That would be great to have. A bit like a one-time favorite.

The list is simply presented so that you can choose the one you want to record.

Yes, that's what I realized when I saw it. I was hoping for something like a "Let Sage pick one to avoid conflicts" option since Sage has a better idea of it's upcoming recording schedule than I have. Especially since there were 6 or 7 showings of the exact same program to choose from.

Thumbs up

I'm with matt91 and abel -- we need a one-time record. I don't think it would clutter up the menus, put it under "record options".
