OK to run Sage v5 client and v4 at Server?
OK to run Sage v5 client and v4 at Server?
To reduce risk - I thought I'd upgrade client before server |

It might depend on what version of v4 you have. If it is v4.1, or one of the v4.1 betas, I think it will work.

But suppose you upgrade the client first and it doesn't work. How will you know whether it's a real bug in v5, or just a client/server version incompatibility? The only way to decide would be to upgrade the server and see if that fixes it. If it does, you're still left with this nagging feeling that you didn't really understand what was wrong, so you can't be completely sure you've fixed it. Seems to me a safer strategy would be to make backups of everything and then upgrade the whole system at once. If it works, you're done. If it doesn't, then at least you know it's a real issue and not some artifact of a hybrid setup. Upgrading piecemeal just makes the troubleshooting that much more complicated if something does go wrong.

But, while installing the client first can have its uses in terms of checking basic functionality, it doesn't test the server side's recording ability. And, of course, I think it is a good idea to back things up before installing an update. - Andy

backups before upgrading - of course.
But with other products in the past, backups didn't save they day due to registry changes and undiagnosable mysterious other causes. I guess backup should include a Windows restore point too. I admit to being paranoid, having been burned more ofen than not in general terms, but this one will kill the WAF if I blow it. |
