Spinning Sage icon while watching a recording in progress

So I thought this was a problem related to the memory leaks and JVM 1.5_06, but apparently not. Often while watching a program that is currently being recorded (so if I start watching Lost after it's been recording for a little while, for example) the audio will drop, the video will freeze, and then any other action (stop, FF, RW) will case a slow-spinning Sage icon to appear.

My only choice is to kill the client. This has been happening for a while, though I can't recall when it started. Sometime in the 4.x range.

I enabled debugging, and in the log I see many repeats of:

Tue 5/16 21:40:32.598 AWTThread Hang Detected - hang time = 13240
Tue 5/16 21:40:32.728 Rendered new font to cache font=java.awt.Font[family=Arial,name=Arial,style=plain,size=44] numGlyphs=1674 numCachedGlyphs=262 numImages=7

Tue 5/16 21:40:32.751 DX9Renderer NATIVE WARNING (non-FAILURE) line 623 hr=0x8876086c

Here's my specifics:
Sage 5.01, running in service mode and using same machine as the GUI
Nvidia FX5200, driver 84.21
FSE
VMR9
Nvidia Decoder 1.02-196
one PVR 250MCE
one PVR 150MCE
PVR drivers are 2.0.24.23025 and 1.18.21.22301
JVM 1.5_05 (no other JVMs installed)
DirectX 9.0c (including recent update, many files are 04/22/2006)

Any thoughts? It's kind of frustrating, it always seems to act up at a pivotal moment in a show!
