HDTV Hard Drive & Bitrate

I'm moving in a few months and at the same time I am considering upgrading my home entertainment system.

I'm currently running a 27" SDTV with a DualTV and a WinTV 150. Everything works fine & I'm recording at "Great" setting ~2gb/hr if I remember right.

If all goes as planned, I'll be upgrading to a 42" Panny Plasma. Well that means I'll need HD I'll be trying to get OTA HD. From http://www.antennaweb.org I'll be ~4 miles from all the major HD feeds so it "should" work well.

I think I'll be getting the VBox Cat's Eye USB. Heard it works just fine (Out of PCI slots).

After all that rambling, there is a question:

So I'm currently recoding SDTV at 2gb/hr, everything I read says I may need/want to upgrade to 3+gb/hr for the bigger TV.

How much space per HR does HDTV OTA feeds take?

I'm figuring I'll need an additional HD (200gb probably wont be enough) and am trying to figure out what size to get.

Numbers and advice appreciated.

Thanx

I find that HD Channels vary a fair amount but in the end they average to about 6GB / HR for me.

Examples:

NBC: SNL last night was 11GB ( 1.5 Hour show so about 7GB/HR)
NBC: Conviction Firday was 14GB ( 2 Hour show so again about 7GB/HR)

FOX: The OC Thursday was 5GB ( 1 Hour show so about 5GB/HR)

PBS: America Expereince - Average of about 10 shows is 6GB/HR.

Hope this helps.

John

The general recommendation is to figure for 9GB/hr (19.4Mbps * 3600s / 8 bits/byte / 1024MB/GB = 8.5GB/hr).

However these days most broadcasters are multicasting several subchannels and Sage only records the one you want, so you rarely get the full 19.4Mbps for your program. Thus actual requirements are somewhat lower as John pointed out.

I typically see file sizes of 7 Gb per hour (7.5 for NBC due to higher Bit rate). The shows that i record are: Law & Order (all of them) normally 7.5 Gb per hr
CSI (all of them), Cold Case, Criminal Minds normall 7 Gb per hours.
