In place recompresion mpeg->mpeg?

I've read a bunch of posts about the problems and procedure about in place compressing by turning an mpeg into an avi, but would you need to do all this if you just compressed the mpeg2 file into a smaller mpeg2 file?

I only ask because one of the wacky byproducts of my DVD burning script is that it generates ~1/2 size HDTV shows that are still in mpeg-2 format. Would I be able to just rename them to match the original and copy them over... or would something bad happen ?

Well I gave it a shot last night and it looks like it doesn't care. I replaced the video while the SageTV Server was running and it played back on my client just fine. All the same though, I'd really like some confirmation from on high (i.e. Narflex) that there isn't a 'gotcha' hiding somewhere.
